Look, BP, I don't want to bother anybody with this, but I do have a question about getting this new car that I need to ask somebody who'd know that isn't selling me the car, know what I'm saying? I need to find out how much I'll get off if I pay cash instead of financing it...from what I understand, it is a significant amount, like half off...could I ask Tim?

WC, I know a lot of cars have big rebates this time of year. It is mostly factory money to help move out the models to make room for the new year cars.

I heard, but never looked, that consumer reports has the figures you are looking for. The were listing a few years ago anyway the mark-up on new cars so you would know how much to offer a dealer outright without a trade in. Maybe this will help.

Around here, the markup on used cars is 1500-2000.00 bucks. Pretty well standardized for whatever area you live in. In other words, they all fall into the same used markup so that nobody really under sells the other dealers.

It used to be 3000-3500 was the actual difference between dealer cost and window sticker. Now with all the dealers and factory incentives I have no idea what you could get off the price. Trucks always carrried more markup than cars.

Last fall, they were offering new Suburbans for 7 or 8000.00 dollars of sticer price!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Randy and (anyone else) our local Chevy/gmc dealers are ALL OVER local radio offering 07 loaded suburbans at $10,000.00 less than spring sales prices..... jeeez i have never bought a new car/truck in my life but (wife #1 put down 5 hundred on a 77 buick starfire) but she had the payment book .... took the car and the coupon book with her.. I am content to drive 15 year old stuff as long as it is not rusted theze days

Randy is right on. Half off is pretty much in the urban legend category. Tim used to tell me of folks who'd walk in with cash and seriously expect to get a $20K car for $10K. The car dealerships don't make that much on them anymore.

Consumer Reports does have great info. They used to come up with a percentage of that you could multiply times the list price to find out what the dealer paid. For instance, a .92 rating means that they paid 92 percent of the list price of the car. That's the best deal you could hope to get. Once

I helped my buddy negotiate for a minivan and we got it for what the dealer paid. To get that deal, they need to be desperate to move cars. The owner of the dealership needs to sign off on a deal like that because they get a stipend for each unit sold, although the salesman will probably not get anything on the deal.

Kelly Blue Book has a great site that offers prices for used vehicles. Go here and select the used cars section. It will give you great info on the price of cars.

Tim was able to get us a killer deal on our Saturn Vue ($9100 on a $12,500 Kelly BB valued car) because the people who traded it in basically took a bath on it. They desperately wanted a Mini Cooper and the dealership killed them on the trade in. Stuff happens every day. No problems sharing the thread! We are in the same boat. I looked around on the Internet for machines the other night. I searched for anything I could find at 20 Gs or less within a 30 mile radius. Found some interesting stuff (including a fire engine red 2004 Jag convertible!) but the most logical things I found were -- you guessed it -- Dodge Minivans. I found a 2005 for $14K and a 2006 for $15K. Both looked acceptable to me. Denise then saw a commercial on TV last night that said Dodge was trying to move 2007s out to make room for 2008s, and was offering like six grand off the price. If I can score one of those with, say, zero percent financing, then it might be a better deal. I have the means to pay more, but I just can't see spending all that extra money for prestige. 15 to 20 grand is perfect and so far, I haven't had to spend more than that -- ever! Trying to keep the record going... bp
