Thanks, folks. Encouraging news came in today. Doug Ardoin got Jim's wife Marsha to add me to her email list and she's sending out updates. It appears that after a setback, Jim has shown improvement and if no further complications happen, they'll be moving him out of CCU, take him off the ventilator, remove the traech tube and put him in a room...with limited visits...next week...maybe. Let's keep our fingers crossed for this very unique and special man. He's not out of the woods yet, but things are starting to look up a little.

Nick asked me to make him a business card. His plan is to take the DVD camera into the garage and do a DVD of himself and put it up on YouTube and MySpace. That's how a lot of guys get gigs nowadays...you do a live DVD and put it there...smart kid...anyway, here's what I came up with for him. Enjoy!

The Meridian contacted Nick asking if Blastula would come and play there. The Meridian is the top concert hall in town before you start playing the Verizon Wireless Center...Blastula was just that good...somebody saw them at Fitzgerald's and tipped off the folks at the Meridian that this band was something special, and although they called a month after Blastula had to split up, it was still a very positive comment on their greatness. I was very proud to find that out. I hit the high spots in town back in the 90s with the Citykings, now I'm "working" in a pro band in town with Pee Wee, but here's Nick, who did this all on his own, at 16 getting called by the Meridian. He's going to do great, I have no doubt...Cheers, WC1

This weekend was Pee Wee Bowen's 65th birthday...it was Party Central, at 2 gigs that were at contrasts both in form and substance. Friday night, we played an outside gig at T-Bone Tom's in Kemah. It was without a doubt the most miserable conditions we've ever played a gig in...steaming hot, no wind, high humidity, just a lousy atmosphere. But we pumped out the songs, the crowd partied and danced (the place was packed all night) and at the end of the night we were all pretty much wasted...dripping with sweat and exhausted. Our new keyboard guy, Hank, is coming along just fine and he is a very cool guy, easy-going and very compromising in his approach. He's a perfect fit for our style, and his talent is right in line with our level of playing...heck, I just like him as a person to begin with and that's a lot of it right there. But that Friday night gig was really tough and hard on us...I didn't feel real good yesterday but I got it together and made it to the gig at Lone Star in Pasadena, the former supermarket-turned nightclub...when I walked in, the air conditioning felt so good I almost laid down and cried...that place was full...not packed, but the dance floor stayed full all night and the band played an outstanding show. I sang a blues "Happy Birthday" to Pee Wee and he got out there with a bunch of people and they all danced to the song. Some funny stuff happened, too...there were birthday cakes all weekend for Pee Wee, during an instrumental that features our sax player Clem, my guitar solo came up. I started playing it, and all of a sudden, here's Pee Wee, right up in my grille. He says "Hey, man, you got any cards on you?" This is while I'm playing a guitar solo...I said "Uh...well...uh...yeah." He says "Where are they?" I'm still trying to play the solo, but I said "They're in my wallet..." He says "Where's your wallet?" I said "It's in my back pocket, but I can't..." He says "Turn around..." so I turned around and he pulled my wallet out of my back pocket and got the band cards out of it and ran off right when the solo ended...the band had a chuckle over that...next weekend it's back to the infamous Club 21 in Galveston for Friday and Saturday night. We're having fun and life is good. Cheers, WC1
