Sorry you got rained out that time, Perry. Hopefully the weekend at Norwalk will see that Anglia rock 'n roll. Cheers, WC1

No, luckily we were just south of the big rains last week. Our yard turned into a small lake, but no major flooding.

Norwalk Blue Suede Cruise Race Report

What a weekend! 3 days of racing and - a first for this season - no rain! It was hot and humid though - not good for cars or people. However the Anglia was screaming.

Friday:
We had 2 qualifying runs this afternoon. Since I hadn't run the car since we were ready for the 2'nd round in BG, I just left the setup alone and ran it. The bad news is that I would have broken out of my 9.10 index in BG. The good news is that the car went straight and true and turned a 9.001! Fastest time for me and the car!

Anyone who knows me knows that I can't leave anything well enough alone. After checking the plugs and running the valves I decided to back the throttle stop off a bit for the 2nd run.

The car launched hard made a move to the wall on the left and got out of the groove. I decided it wasn't going that direction too violently so I stayed in and wrestled it back into the groove. Ran it through for a 9.020.

We serviced the car and put it's cover on for the night to go watch the fuelers and funny cars.

Saturday:
We were awakened by the sounds of "wake up little suzy" blasted over the Norwalk PA system. Stumbled out of the motor home to some air thick with humidity. fun times....

We got another 2 time trials today. While getting the car ready, I decided to back the throttle stop clear off. The car seemed to be handling well, so let's let the little hemi scream.

The first run of the day I was lined up next to a Nova that I ran the day before and had been running 8.61's all weekend. The Anglia left hard and straight. I hit the shifter and noticed that the Nova was still there - he wasn't running away from me. Went past the 1000' mark, and the nova was still there - either he was having a bad run, or I was having a good one. The shift light came on again way early and the little hemi was up on song - life was good. I hit the chute as I ran through the traps, coasted around the turn around and shut her down. They handed me the time slip - 8.634 @ 152!

Back in the pits I went through the engine - it's fat and happy just like it should be. I wasn't going to change anything - we're running an 8.60 index and we were currently sitting at number 6 qualifier.

The 2'nd run of the day was darn near a replay of the first. Nice and straight for a 8.630.

Changed the oil, covered her up and watched the big boys battle it out before the fireworks. It was a good Saturday.

Sunday:
We have 1 more qualifying run this this morning, then eliminations this afternoon.

Since this event is primarily a car show, they let the street rods run down the track when we're not racing. Since the big guys finished up on Saturday night, we weren't going to get a huge amount of track prep.

The last qualifying run was interesting at best. When I pulled into the burnout area I could see the bald spot on the starting line. I did my burnout and staged the in an attempt to catch some rubber beside the spots. I launched and the car moved to the left out of the groove. It shook, lost traction, the nose came down and I wrestled it back over to the groove. When it found it - the nose came back up again - gave the fans something to talk about for a while. I ran it on through for a 8.73. A bit off, but everyone else was slowing down due to track conditions. Plus, it's a time that I would have been tickled pink with a couple of days ago.

We went up for the first round. The ladder paired me with a Willys that had not run faster than 9.40 all weekend. Apparently he decided that it wasn't worth it and didn't bother to show for the first round, so I got a bye run. I thought about making an easy pass, but that wouldn't be any fun! It launched and shook, but stayed in the groove and calmed down. 8.66.

2nd round paired me with Jack Sidor's little front engined dragster. He had been number 2 qualifier with a 8.602 run, but had been running in the mid 60's most of the weekend. It should have been a good race. Note the 'should have'. I launched and it shook hard and headed toward the centerline. This one was going - I wasn't going to be able to drive this one out - I pedaled and headed it the right way. I ran it through for a 8.96 to Jack's 8.67.

I was done, but happy. It was a good weekend for me and the car. We got a lot of seat time and learned some more. It looks like I need to do some more ladder bar work to get the shake under control. Oh - and I need a new roof cover - the nice diamond tufted cover didn't hold up very well at 150+...

Great weekend, Perry! Excellent performances! Super post! I'm sure you will get the shake worked out; you got some good track time and you got to do some racing. That is such a fine car, it's a classic and yet it's modern-day equipment. Good luck next time out! WC1
