A little more on my quarter midget racing career. We did very well racing ole # 2. I won several races with it. Enough so that I was handicapped several feet at the start of each race.
Keep in mind that my Dad built this car by hand in our basement. When I say by hand, I mean by hand, with a hand operated breast drill. He couldn't afford an electric drill at the time.
He used the coal fired furnace as a forge to heat things such as the front axle to bend it.
A couple of things about my car were unique. The lever on the right side of the car when pulled would apply the brakes. See Rapid, I've had hand brakes forever! LOL
When the lever was in the forward position, it applied an idler pulley to tighten the drive belt. This belt would normally slip some in normal operation.
The throttle was controlled by a choke cable. When my Dad would start the car, he would set it where he wanted it and I was, under no circumstances, to pull it open any more.
This car also did not have any suspension.
I distinctly remember one race in 1954, BTW, I still have the trophy with the date, where one of my competitors, with a factory made car was told by his Dad as he was getting in his car to win or else.
This was at Santa Fe Raceway Park, a clay track near Chicago.
I don't remember just how many cars were in this particular race, maybe 4 to 6 cars, but after being handicapped at the start, I managed to pass all but one by the first turn. Of course, this was the kid that was told to win or else that was still ahead of me. We ran something like three laps, and after continually trying to pass him on the inside and being cut off, and actually screaming at him to get out of my way, I took drastic measures. I knew I didn't have enough power to go around this guy on the outside, what with the amount of laps left in the race.
I forgot to mention that the track was lined in the inside with partially buried tires to mark the boundaries. This guy kept forcing me onto those tires and I had had enough. Going into turn 3 on the last lap, he again cut me off forcing me to ride these tires, which was getting painfull with solid suspension. My right front tire was actually rubbing his left rear tire and I had had enough. My butt was sore. I didn't have the padding in those days that I have now! LOL.
I yelled at him to get out of my way one last time and he said no. I pulled that throttle cable wide open, pushed the brake lever forward as far as I could, thus tightening the drive belt, and cranked the steering wheel to the right. I sent him sliding off and I was told he actually grazed the wall.
I won the race, but I was a bit worried about being in trouble for pulling that throttle wide open against my Dad's orders. When I asked if he was angry with me for doing this, he said he wondered why it took me so long to do it as he could see that the car and I were both taking a beating. He and my brother were actually yelling at me to do just what I did.
Not necessarily put the kid in the wall, but to get around him.
I didn't see it but my brother said he saw the other kids Dad beating on him for losing.
I really felt sorry for that kid.
I thank God that I was blessed with a terrific set of parents and some very, very special siblings. I sure do miss both my Dad and my brother.
