OK..
A buddy of mine that lives down by Carolina Dragway, The House of Hook" for y'all southern folks, owns a fab shop and a used car lot. The car lot is more a cash business and tax thing for him than anthing else.

Anyway, he goes to an auction every tuesday and buys cars. Well, last summer, I asked him to look around for a full size blazer or bronco for me (preferably a blazer as I am a chevy guy) and if he found a decent one for a price to buy it for me.

Well, I was working down there at the time and I would go over to his shop every nigt after work and we would fool around with cars. He is a big time rodder.. Has a '32 chevy rod, '38 chevy pro street and a killer '47 caddy that he is going to put a 572 crate motor in. We were working on his wife's '68 Camaro.

The day after I asked him to look for the truck, I went to his shop and sure enough, there was an '86 Bronco there. Faded paint and all... BUT.. Brand new BFG 34" tires on new eagle alloy wheels, new brakes and shocks on all four corners, a very nice interior, cold a/c and 351W with abour 3000 miles on it. Performer intake, edelbrock carb, a few other goodies including a nice Kenwood stero for the morning that I had to turn SRV way up loud to keep me awake on my way to work.
$2500 bucks later, I owned a Bronco.

I drove it all over, went mudding with it on a weekly if not daily basis. Well, I guess that was around June or so.

In November I went to the Chevy dealer in Greenville to trade my Full size truck with WAY too many miles on it for a new trailblazer for my wife. Our son was asleep in my truck so i told her to go test drive the trail blazer and I was going to go look at this Monte on the lot. The dealership is Kevin Whittaker Chevy in Greenville, SC.

Mr. Whittaker is an avid car collector. In his showroom that day there was a '54 vette, A '55 bel Air that was was immaculate, A '67 SS 396 4-speed chevelle a '60 elcamino, a 70's model Camaro with 12 miles on the clock and a couple other late model cars. He had several more out back but you get the idea.

So, another sales guy omes out and alks to me about the car. I ask how much and he says $6500.00. I told him to go back inside. He comes back out with the keys and says they can let it go for $6000.00 and opens it up. starts it up and it sounds good. I look around and it needs a new carpet and so on. Notice that the paint is sort of crappy and some poor body work had been done.
BUT... all in all, a nice driver and I am not really into the spit and polish anyway.

So, I buy the trailblazer and momma is a happy girl but I could not get the black car out of my mind.

Two weeks later, I roll in there after work in the bronco and it's gone. I go in to ask about it and the guy says yeah, we still have it, we just don't put it out in the rain.
OK, i have them put it up on a lift and I look it over. A little spot of here and there underneath, noting bad. Rock solid floors and trunk. Leaks oil, leaks tranny fluid, but hey, it is older than I am..

Had a 12 bolt, th car was all there and i liked it.

I told him that I would give himm the bronco and 500 bucks.

OK, this getting way too long..
Bottom lne, I gave them the Bronco and a grand. I drove it home for 3500 bucks.

It was worth every penny.
Still want a full size blzer though.

Saw one of those Monte Carlos in Quebec during a Stock/Superstock event many moons ago. It was a 1970 with a 454 oval port / Quadrajet and it ran either SS/GA or SS/HA . It was black with large Truppi/Kling decals on the quarters. It used to carry the wheels about 200 feet or more every pass.

I sort of fell in love with these cars about 7-8 years ago.

I was still in NY and went to the track with a buddy of mine who raced a 10.90 '69 Camaro.

This guy shows up with a '71 Monte back half car but....... Full interior, inspection sticker and plates on it.

Just pained, Porche Red. Gorgeous car.

He goes out and rips a high 9 second pass... and i go back over to talk to him again and start looking the car over really close.. A very well done car, looked like a show car.

In small letters across the bottom of the trunk I noticed this...

"NO BOX, NO BOTTLE, GREAT BIG BALLS AND A WHOLE LOTTA THROTTLE!"

I had to have one.
