Sounds great, Don! the Bird looks like it doesn't need much in the tear-down phase, a little massaging and it'll be ready for primer? I am wondering if all the trim is still around or if you were planning to put it all back on...but yes, the engine and drivetrain combo sounds good. It should end up being a great runner! Keep us posted! Cheers, WC1

Bumpers, tail lights and grille are about all the trim that's going back on it. Since the bumpers are rusty and their chrome is peeling we might just make fiberglass copies of them but if not they'll be painted with Dupli Color "chrome" paint. It's missing the little "gills" on the front of the rear quarter panels since both quarter panels are aftermarket ones for a 67 Camaro. Windows will be Lexan so no chrome trim there. Paint will be flat black just like the VW and all my other race cars from the 60's and 70's. The car should be fairly light - it's got fiberglass front fenders already, it will have an aluminum floor and wheel tubs and Lexan windows so I'm hoping to come in around 3000 lbs with my 280 in the seat.

Will be changing plans again. Little brother has an unused and complete Jegster Vega chassis sitting around ever since he bought a complete round tube chassis 72 Vega. He's trying to talk me into dropping a late model Cavalier or Sunbird body on it. A 1995-2000 Cavalier/Sunbird complete with all it's glass and no rust is also going to be a hell of a lot less work than finishing that old Firebird rust bucket. I will have to buy shorter axles for my 12 bolt and get the housing narrowed but what I save on replacement Firebird body parts and bodywork expenses should more than pay for it.
Brother just scanned and emailed me the diagram that came with my chassis. He figures a late 1990's Pontiac Sunfire is just the right size body for it(too bad my old VW Golf wouldn't fit - that would freak a lot of people out)

Good call on that...heck, it's a ready-to-rock Jeg's tube chassis...this is a great start to a great race car project...I liked the Firebird, not that you couldn't have built it, but this leapfrogs it. Good luck and keep us posted...BTW, isn't a Sunfire the Pontiac equivalent of a Chevy Cobalt? Cheers, WC1

Spent hours today searching out wheelbases and track width dimensions and now I'm having "Evil Scientist" thoughts about a potential race car body...... Be advised that I may need to be talked out of something silly at some point in the near future.

Sorry Don, you probably won't find any help here in that area. We like to see people go off the deep end. Why be normal, life is better when you're not. :D :D :D :D
