My brother just sent me this pic of a European Golf with a Jegster chassis. Since a Golf and a Vega both have a 97"wheelbase maybe this is not such an "Evil Scientist" plan after all. The resemblance to my current ride is spooky...........

"Going over the edge" is right - A Jegster chassis under a Golf has got to be the most tempting mad scientist project we've had yet and it doesn't help when you walk out the back door and see last year's race car. Even more tempting is the fact we have another identical 1991 Golf in much better shape than this one parked at Dad's plus it's already gutted inside and missing all it's drivetrain. Someone please talk me out of this SOON................

Geez - I honestly don't know what to do here. I wish my brother had never sent me that photo. In my opinion a small block Chevy powered VW Golf with 14X32s and a tube chassis is just plain wrong or sick(can't decide which). . What's even scarier is this is the first "hare brained scheme" my brother and I've had in thirty years that Marie actually liked and even a couple of our more pessimistic friends thought was a good idea. But I wonder maybe those may be the best reasons to NOT build it?

Construction would be easy I think - The wheelbase and track width are so close to the Vega it's not funny. Since the VW body design is slabsided the shell might just drop down over a finished chassis/cage. We have another 2 door Golf and a Jetta parts car so I wouldn't have to take one part off my current Street class VW. Heck, we could even run two classes someday with both Golfs.
Opinions please.......

I don't know why you're hesitating!

In my opinion the 'different' cars are what keeps racing interesting. There's already a thousand Cavalier/Sunbird/Cobalt/whatever-else-had-the-same-bodystyle cars out there. Been there - done that - let's move on.

You're going to build a tube chassis race car with a small block chevy in it. It doesn't really matter what you dress it in. You might as well make sure that you won't be wearing the same dress as half the crowd when you get to the dance.

(if it's any consolation, I wanted to build an Opel Olympia wagon - I thought it would be cute, but the wife immediately vetoed it as too ugly... )

There's not that much difference between the Golf and a Chevette...and those look pretty cool.

A buddy of mine was asking me a few weeks ago to help him decide which to build....a 74(ish) Vega Wagon or a VW Wagon...I told him Vega's were a dime a dozen, whereas A Bug wagon would be unique/different. Just the other day I asked about this situation...the Bug owner keeps going up on the price ....hmmm...so much for unique

Had to Google that one as I couldn't remember what they looked like. WOW, I think you missed the boat on that one as that would have been an unusual unit but don't tell her I said that as I like my body parts just as they are. Unbroken!

Yeah - to me it's kind of a cross between an 58 Anglia wagon and a mini 55 Chevy Nomad. They're only slightly bigger than a Prefect and I figured I could hide all kinds of hemi between the fat little fenders.
I guess maybe I'm only allowed to have one toy at a time...

That Opel wagon has got to be the neatest thing I've seen in ages - i want one.....
