We do St. James Infirmary (with New Orleans jazz muted horn stylings), Turn On Your Love Light, Further On Up The Road, I Pity The Fool, Stormy Monday, a bunch of Bobby Bland, but Otis Redding is Pee Wee's greatest forte'. We played at the Dickinson, Texas VFW Saturday night to a packed house that went wild over us. LOTS of dancing and partying in the crowd. I hung out with these guys that were working on Pee Wee's engine in his '56 and they were good people. They said they got tired just watching us. I told 'em, you get used to it. It's just what we do. I can't always remember where we've played. I do know where we're going to play next. I'm also deaf. Other than that, I like to think I'm living proof that prolonged exposure to loud rock 'n' roll music is harmless. I have said before that this band has a big following. They were ALL there and then some Saturday night...what I've seen lately in the crowd is when we play for folks that haven't ever seen us play before, they kind of look at us weird at first, like, oh, yeah, this is going to be boring or something...and then we play it their facial expressions turn to shock and awe. I saw shock and awe Saturday night, and our folks have been coming over and telling me how much they enjoy the website. Thanks to Maritime for his up-to-the-minute updates and the site runs like a top. Pee Wee took the time to introduce each of us on stage and he told the crowd, you folks have been raving about our website, how much fun it is and how great it looks. Well, this man right here who is singing and playing guitar for me is the guy who does our website. Big Bad John Bockelman. Cheers from the band and the crowd. I was humbled. I just bowed. He introduced each of us and we all got great support from the whole place. It was a wonderful ego massage, lemme tellya. Pee Wee is an incredible performer and he's also a great bandleader. We played that gig for basic expenses. It was a fundraiser for that VFW post. Some lady took the tip jar out into the crowd, and it came back FULL. We each walked out of there with $124 in our pockets at the end of the night. There are good people out there and I'm happy to say I get to be part of that scene. Cheers, WC1
Oh, I almost forgot. The Wildcats are going to reunite and record a CD this year. We're going to do it at Kim's studio. We should have done it a long time ago, it's some juicy psychedelic blues-rock, all-original and Kim will meticulously mix and master it. He does good work. We're looking forward to it. I intend to title it "High Performance". Cat

I sent out an email to my music contacts along with this business card early this morning:

VERSATILE MUSICIAN FOR HIRE

Keyboards / Guitar / Bass / Vocals

Sunday through Thursday

I play in the Pee Wee Bowen Band on a pretty consistent schedule of Friday and Saturday nights with an occasional weeknight, Sunday or daytime gig, usually during the holiday season. I can work any time when Pee Wee's band is off. An updated schedule is kept online at:
www,peeweebowenband.com

$100 per gig

Thanks,
John Bockelman

If I don't recognize your number I'll pick up when you start talking after the message beep.

I ran this idea past Pee Wee and he's cool with it, he understands and says I can do anything I want outside of our schedule. I told him about it first and made sure it was cool with him because I don't want stuff like this coming back to him through the grapevine. Our friendship is based on trust and I'm not going to pull a "fast one" on a guy that's stood by me loyal and true for so long. There are gossipers out there that would call him and give him the "Did you know what JOHN is up to???" He knows times are tough and he supports my decision. I also applied with the Fort Bend Independent School District for a bus driving gig this morning after I got back from dropping Nick off at the airport...my sister Sylvia is taking him to Europe for 10 days starting tomorrow. They're going to the Montreaux Jazz Festival for 2 days and London by way of Amsterdam after that...wish I could go! I'm looking into getting a government grant and financing Medical Transcription certification training...I type fast and I think I can do it well...went to a job fair with my wife and older son Kyle today and it was a ridiculous waste of time and effort. One personnel agency, 6 financial advisory companies and 5 insurance companies, the Dallas Police Department and the US Army were there. There were maybe 15 people at those booths and 275 people lined up to talk to the one lady at the Personnel Agency...I'd still be standing in line...we left...Debby is considering going back to bartending, which she was doing when I met her. She doesn't think anybody'll hire her because she's "old" but I told her she's still pretty and she'll sell a lot of drinks, probably get offered "extra work" as well...being unhirable sucks...I didn't work all my life to lose it all now. I have 2 years until I qualify for Social Security. I'm gonna do whatever I can to make ends meet until then. One guy contacted me about the music email, I'm meeting his band Sunday. They want me on keyboards. My buddy Steve is giving me a bass to get set up with so I can play bass for somebody if they need it...great guy, Steve is...anyway, Debby is unhappy about the way things are. I can't imagine why! We're slipping between the cracks. Something great is going to happen soon, I have no doubt. Playing Martinis & More coming up this weekend, should be a 3-ring circus...Cheers, WC1
