It was Fats Domino playing the intro to "Blueberry Hill" on the scratchy AM radio in me and my sister's babysitter's boyfriend's car at the beachfront roller skating rink on a Sunday evening in 1957 that struck me like a thunderbolt, blew my mind, and changed me forever. I was 8 years old, between my 2nd and 3rd years of a 10-year classical piano and music theory training marathon at the Dominican Nun convent's music conservatory in Galveston. Up to that point, I wanted to be like Liberace. After hearing that song, I wanted for the rest of my life to be like Fats Domino. I'm still trying. The band I play in does that song. Life is good.
Hail, Hail, Rock n' Roll! Long live Antoine "Fats" Domino, the coolest cat to ever slick his hair back, put on a zoot suit, and rock out on a piano. In my world, nothing has ever topped that song ("Twilight Time" by the Platters runs a close second). It's beautiful stuff. Thanks for the info, Gate! Happy Birthday, Fats! Cheers, WC1
