The Night Shift

Here's where we go to kick back after the races with our pals. Pour a tall one, punch a few buttons on the jukebox, and relax...

BP,
Raleigh News and Observer (4/12/06) p.1D1 Karin Rives

Re:IT
"Many people expect that the graduation rate of US students from US universities- about 70,000 per year-will not suffice to fill the projected 600,000 add'l openings for information systems professionals between 2002 and 2012 along with the openings due to retirements.

Good news for our future IT pros.

The Baby Boomers with 'Cat's skills are sorely needed....( If it's the right "Fit"...'Cat is a post "boomer", but skills out the Kazoo........
Some employer is going to be lucky and glad to have my pal 'Cat on their payroll)

Cat, it said that the resume no longer exists... check that dude!

Wally, thanks for the notice... the IT future is always bright, it seems. I should have stated that the folks on my teams are at the department head/project manager level... so I'm looking for nuance, ability to influence others, political savvy, etc.

I'm very excited about the IT profession... Jason is in an advanced placement high school that will teach him general HS subjects for two years and then put him on track to achieve a Cisco Router certification upon graduation... around this town, our problem will be to entice him to go to college when there will be dozens of job offers at nearly twice the national salary average... bp

Thanks, BP...it shows up fine from here...don't know what to do, I'll try accessing it from Randolph's computer later and see if it comes up...Jason will have to make some decisions, all right, but I think he'll realize that the best way to go will be to get his degree before he starts out in the work force, my opinion...he'll know he shouldn't pass on that opportunity, which is much better for him in the long run. Gotta split, back later. Cheers, WC1

I'm off tonight, Debby and the boys are going to San Antone and Austin over the weekend, so it'll be me and Sabbath and Mr. Goodvibes here all weekend. Playing tomorrow night at Beamer's and Sunday in Galveston, but last night I went down to the Cock-Eyed Seagull in Clear lake and played the open-mic jam with Tom Rodgers, a guitar player. Tom's an excellent musician. A guy named Donnie Taylor came in and played the last hour and a half with us. Donnie can play but he's a little quirky...that is, he plays songs as he figures out they sound, not like the original...I made the mistake of telling him that I teach a blues guitar class and he immediately told me that I have to show them how to play his style, which is the only correct blues guitar style. He plays solo acoustic, and he's good, but the only catch to that is that they hired ME to teach MY stuff, which is different than his...but of course, he let me know I'm not teaching the right stuff to those folks...great, Donnie! Nice to meet ya...sorry I said anything at all to you. I didn't know I was that bad! He's one of those guys that you shake his hand at the end of the night and smile and say it's been great meeting you and jamming with you (when actually it was a pain in the @ss), and he goes, yes, it was...I didn't give him my CD but when he said well, who do you play with, I told him and I told him I know who he is because I do the 5th Street ads for the Scene magazine and his name is in there. He ignored that. It was star-time. Well, that's how it is in a lot of those kinds of situations, ya know. I jut shined it on. He did an OK "Up On Cripple Creek", which was the only song he did that I actually recognized and could pick right up...Another guy was there that played decent 12-string guitar; he does Beatles songs, but he doesn't sing. So he kept trying to make us play Beatles songs, but he wasn't playing the entire arrangement, just the main hooks and stuff...he didn't cut it too well...a cowboy came in with his mom and dad and his buddy and his best girl and he got up, very nervously, and sang 2 songs great. He had a perfect pitch and a tenor voice and he knew his songs, but he was very uptight about getting up there and singing, he told me he'd never sang on stage before...I went over to him afterwards and told him, you should sing on stage every night, man. That was GREAT! He couldn't believe...then his girlfriend got up and totally ruined "Crazy" by Patsy Cline. She couldn't find the tempo at all...or maybe she couldn't hear us playing the song while she was singing it or something...she was absolutely horrible...she lasted one song...it was a challenging and interesting night. I played keyboards mostly but I did play some guitar here and there, and I did stuff I wrote. I got paid 50 bucks for the gig. Cheers, WC1
