I have no doubt you'd do just That, Doc.....and trust me...I appreciate the thought..........I DO have an Ace up my sleeve for a tow vehicle, but will HAVE to make some upgrades to Patch (my trailer) before I set out on that long a journey....(heavier duty axles and brakes etc......the axles under there now were fine and dandy when the trailer was as produced; an open style, but when I dropped that box down on it...the weight is a little too much.....oh well...story of my life.)
I wanna bring yoose guys up to date on what has been going on with Peggy in the last month or so.....
When Tim was building the motor in his engine room, he spun the oil pump with a drill for probably thirty minutes (or more) trying to get the rockers to oil....a few of them did. We put the motor over in the chassis, plumbed everything up, finished wiring and fired the beast up.....MAN!! that thing sounded GREAT (but I want my mufflers put back on there as soon as possible

).....We only let it run for a minute or so, and shut 'er down so we could take the valve covers off and check things over....there was STILL no evidence that the rockers were oiling

......Tim had me crank it back up and he visually gave things a once over, but the motor went to skipping.......turns out, that the push rods were trying to seize up in the rockers and were deflecting instead of opening the valves like they were supposed to.........Soooo.....we took the intake off, pulled the distributor out and hooked up the drill one more time........after thirty minutes of spinning the drill, I gave up....and ask Tim to "humor me, and turn one of the sets of lifters around "backwards"......He did.....and I hit the trigger on the drill......instantly dousing Tim's pants leg with a stream of oil shooting out of one of the push rods that he had turned around.......
He said let's leave it alone and make some phone calls about the lifters. (trust me, the lifters were getting PLENTY of oil [85 lbs according to the gauge]....but there was little to No oil going through the pushrods.......and YES.....All of the pushrods were clean as a whistle inside.......)...Damn thing had us Both scratching our heads.......
Tim made some phone calls the next day and got several different ideas from as many folks......then he called Jon Kasse and asked one of the guys there about the problem......(LOL)....the guy held the phone away from his face and hollered out "Hey Kasse!!..Ever heard of any **** ******* [name deleted to protect the innocent] Lifters???.......from the back of the shop Tim could hear Kasse reply.."Throw them M**&^A - F^%%$$ pieces of *&## in the trash and get some REAL lifters!!!.....After making a few phone calls myself, I pretty much got the same message

.......Soooo....a new set of lifters was ordered.......when Those came in...it was obvious that my pushrods were no longer useful either, due to the increased depth of the new lifters, all the geometry was out of kilter.
Yup...new pushrods were ordered (they needed to be .200 longer, and that is what we now have)......THEN....my guide plates were not allowing the pushrods and rockers to properly align with the valve stems (on a couple of cylinders).....and a new set of guide plates had to be ordered......wouldn't ya know....we were sent the wrong ones, not once, but THREE times!!!...Grrrrrrr!!!!......Once the correct ones were delivered, everything was assembled (including all the stud girdle etc) and closely inspected......Hmmm....the rockers were "just" making contact with the springs......so everything was dismantled and the rockers were "massaged" with a die grinder, to make sure the was no possibility of unlocking the keepers........everything was then buttoned back up and inspected again.......Nope.....things were STILL not quite right, as the guide plates were binding the pushrods "ever so slightly" and Tim didn't like what he was seeing.......the pushrods were not "free" to spin as they are supposed to. SO..... everything was dismantled once again, and the guide plates were given the die grinder treatment......
After everything was re-assembled and very closely inspected once again....we hooked up the drill and gave it a spin.......in less than 30 seconds, all eight rockers were oiling up a storm. Tim told me to shut the drill off, then said...."Put the damn intake back on this junk!!"...then he mumbled something about junk lifters and went in the house.
This past Sunday we put the distributor back in and.....wait a minute....I already posted what happened above....refer to my earlier post for a refresher read......
The big Brown truck delivered some of my stuff a while ago....and it was like Christmas opening all the shiny new stuff......More as things develop.....Stay tuned!!
