you "might" even consider as high as a 320 (ish) gear....depending on the availability of such an animal......grunt it down low....and hang on for dear life on the big end

I don't know - a 3.20 gear would require quite a bit of grunt...

With a 33" tire, assuming no tire growth and no converter slip, you're looking at 4890 RPM at 150 MPH. I would think that you're probably looking someplace around 160MPH with the little guy, which still only gives you 5200 RPM. Since the tire is going to grow - it will be less than that.

How much of an arm do you have in your motor?

I'm used to running hemi's and they like to sing, but 5000 RPM seems like a pretty low trap RPM to me.

Here's the link to TCI's racing calculators:

About halfway down is a rear-end ratio calc, and a 1/4 mile RPM calc. You can plug in numbers and see what you get.

Thanks Perry, I think we figured one time,.. at 7200 in high it was 170 mph or so with the 4.10's Thats what we were shooting for. Last year it ran 8.40 @ 160 with less compression, smaller, different lobe center cam, and too small a pump. I believe we better give this combo a chance before we change gears. I agree Perry, 3.20's are pretty high, a lot of people run 3.50's with a small block and nitro, but thats a high percentage. The engine is a 351 windsor with a 408 stroker in it. It pulls so hard at 6-7000, the engine acts like it has no load in high to burn any fuel. When you grunt it at 6000, it rips your head off when you leave, and on the shift. I shift it at 7500, and when the rpm drops and is starting to come back up, it pulls like crazy, then kinda lays down and acts like it does'nt want to pull at the other end. We are gonna play with cam timing, ign timing and fuel before we condemn anything. We just need to get some things ironed out I think it will be fine. I appreciate you all's input, it sure helps to have a bunch of ideas to kick around, Thanks!!
If you think it's exciting now, wait till we start it.

the featherweight stature of the pipe rack could "easily" accomodate a 3.20 gear....and I'd wager it would'nt lay down on the top end either......buck-80 in the traps??...could be even more <wink>

Thanks Billy, we are gonna kick it around and see, It may have more grunt than I'm giving it credit for! We are used to buzzing different engines and we just need to get out of that mentality with this one I guess. :D

When is the next trip Lippy?
I think a couple weeks Doug, I have fuel tank work to do first, not a big deal, gonna put a trap door in it. 8)

OK, this might sound like a dumb question but....

What's the trap door for?

I'll take a stab at this one, Lippy (correct me if I am wrong)....
The trap door will allow fuel from the front side of the tank to get to the rear of the tank under acceleration...but will close off and trap fuel in the rear of the tank under braking or letting out of the gas......thus keeping a steady feed of fuel to the line so that "maybe" the motor won't have to starve for fuel, after a burnout, or any dry-hops that may get performed in an effort to show off for the pretty girls in attendance.

Showing off for the pretty girls part of that makes sense...

Seriously, that sounds like a killer idea. Sort of like the trap doors in my oil pan...
A sheetmetal "checkvalve" of sorts.
