This time we drove the P.U. too, so we could claim a pit spot & it gave us a place to put our "stuff". Jeff said I should make the first pass, so, after 30+ years of race free living I hopped in and headed for the staging lanes. I pulled up to the ticket puncher dude and said, this is actually my Son's caar........I'm just gonna put one lap on it. He punched my card laughed a little & said go have fun.
I was lined up against another camaro that was there practicing his 12.00 index passes so I knew right off this was gonna be a 1 car race. Last time out Jeff ran a 15.5 something. We pull through the tunnel and into the water box. I warm up the tires and let go of the line lock and get it stopped B4 the beams. I bump the first bulb, then the second and as I'm playin' around with the line lock I quickly discover how thick 30+ years of rust can be. I hung around for .555 before deciding the best thing to do is leave.
Based on how the car ran the last time I drove it "out south of town" I left fairly hard. As it turns out, a little too hard. Let me just say the caaar needs slicks. I purdy' much fried the tires for the first 60' or so, hit second and did it some more. 60' time was 1.62. I was skating around like I was on ice. I shouldn't have left so hard. I ended up runnin' a 15.004. That was a half second faster than last week, but still purdy' sad.
I headed back to the staging lanes and the card punch guy started laughing as soon as he saw me. "I thought you said 1 lap"."Your hooked already aren't ya'? ". well........maybe? My second pass I still only managed a .275 light, but hit 5th instead of 3rd. That 6 speed has a very tight shift pattern and 3rd gear is a mystery. Sometimes ya' hit it sometimes ya' don't. For normal street drivin' it's fun, but shifin' fast under power just doesn't work. Not like the ol' rock crusher that usta' work great shiftin' with the go pedal to the floor. (but, even hittin' 5th I still smoked that lil' ricer in the left lane

Jeff was up next. He did a nice burnout and pulled to the line. He did his burnout and rolled through the beams a little. My bud Gregg was workin' the starting line and he pointed at me told the other track guy, it's his kid. We got a chuckle out of it, and I found out that I had done some sign work for the guy several years ago. "Small World" I digress.
Jeff lights the bulbs and he's off. He left a little easier than i did and got it to hook some better. He turned his best time @ 14.04. WOW, a second & a half off last week. purdy cool.
That would be his best ET of the night out of 4 runs, but, on another run I pointed out to him that he ran a 9.06 1/8 time. I said you know my best 1/8 mile time with the 66 GTO was 9.08. That put a grin on his face.
I think if he gets a set of slicks he may just beat my best 1/8 time with the ol' panel truck of 8.48. Now that would make his day and make me purdy proud too.
I told him, beat 8:48 and you're the fastest............. for awhile.
If Jeff shows up @ Eddyville with slicks, you'll know he's gunnin' for me.

I'll post some pics. when I get some extra time.
