ok, for anyone out there that still gives a rip, here's the latest. the wifes mini van blew a head gasket and i refuse to fix it again so i'm going to go ahead and build the 71 malibu that i bought for her and have been gathreing parts for around a year and a half, so the bad news is that i get to put the race car on the back burner for a while untill i get her car done. i put her to driving my 94 chevy p/u so she can still get around while i do her car and there's no pressure to " just get it done "i have put my old 77 gmc high sierra back into service for me to drive. i am going with a stone stock 283/ with a tuned port setup from a camaro, but since the smallest engine offered in the camaros was a 305 the injector's pulse width will be too much for the 283 even if just slightly, so i'm going with a megasquirt standalone fuel managment system, it's fully programable with a laptop so i should be able to make it work perfectly with the tpi/283 combo. i already picked up my 700r4 transmission from eddie rogers. he intalled better boost valves, a manual speedo drive, and a lockup circut that will only work in 4th gear, and rebuilt the entire thing. i went with a stock tourqe convertor since i have a self imposed goal of 25-30 mpg with this car. i have a 65 3:73 posi-track rear end that came out of my race car that i never used as i assumed 850ish hp with the nitrous on would kill it and those things are gettig hard to find ( especially the 64-67's becuase they're 1 inch narrower than the 68-72's ) i'm going to go ahead and go through it from drum to drum, but on initial inspection it looks good. since this is my wifes car i can't be too careful. i need to install new 1/4 panels on the car and paint it, the color will be that electric blue that dodge put on everything for the 90's with silver super sport stripes, i'm just going to use a flat hood since i already have two really nice ones, and a bench seat so i don't have to buy a console and this is just going to be a nice driver anyway. i'm not trying to do a full blown clone either....................i loaded the old junk chevelle (race car) today along with the engine and trans..............although i did manage to turn over the cherry picker and wiped out the flywheel and oil pan "doooooooooooh!" so i'm taking it to the shop where i work now and installing the engine and trans if for no other reason that to get them out of my shop and out of the way, i'll post some picks later this week when i drag the 71 down off of the hill, and start the parts ordering frenzy....stay tuned!!

I am with ya Hillbilly, but if you mention a 283 again without it being backed by a Nash 5-speed, and 12,000 RPM numbers I might have to take a crowbar to you.

I had a friend who's dad was a mechanic. When he finally got his first car is was a 1969 396 4-speed SS Chevelle. Blue with Black guts, factory rims and a perfect body and interior. His dad bought it without a motor and trans. All that part is cool, now for the part where his dad needed an a**kicking!!

HE PUT A 283 OIL BURNING SOB IN IT WITH A FRICKING P/GLIDE!!! It was a stock 283, that burned more oil than gas!!

It still pi**es me off to this day that a great cond car was treated like that.

well randy, you don't have to worry as this car was a pile from the beginning, i'll call the 700r4 the rb/nash from now on, and we'll use a divider for the rpm, i'll set the tach on 4cyl like i used to do as a kid just for you. i used to always laugh at my buddies when they'd spazz out because my car would turn so many rpm's  ................... i got the engine and trans back in the 65 today, made a pass down in the buiseness district of a 22000 person town (back street) but alas she's still bleeding out of the rear main seal, it don't drive no better either, i thought all that time in time out would make the old heffer see the light, guess it's time for a vacum pump, tomorrow i start ordering parts for the 71, oh yea, lippy, i'm gonna live while i'm alive, plenty of time to sleep when you're dead.

 FH your exploits remind me of when i was in hi-school shop autoshop. i built a 1956 265cubic inch chevy for the class project... then after i got a grade on it i sold the motor to a guy with a studebaker pick-up that allready had a blown up 283/powerglide in it. he came by and picked up the motor, paid me whatever, rented a cheryypicker and bolted in the moter then called me a week later complaining there were no starter holes drilled in the block !!! the 56 style smallblock starter bolts to an early iron bellhousing for a standard shift or old style turbo-hydramatic trans so when he went to put the bolts in , ALL THE HOLES WERE GONE !!

My first car (A '56 Chevy) went through 6 engines of various C.I.D. until I finally dropped a 350 4 bolt in it. Senior year of High school I overhauled it for a shop class project. Previous to the 350 I would run 'em til they became bug foggers and then I'd go back to the salvage yard and swap for another. I was on the $75.00 + core program with the bone yard.   Go pedal only had 2 positions in that car.
