The funny car event at Marion County was a wild time - nice cars, nice facility, nice weather (although hot), great people.
The track conditions kept us all on our toes. It was a bit on the slippery side, and was always a little different. It started coming around in the evening, but I think everyone was also getting more of a handle on what to do to get down the track.
There were 16 gassers with quite a range of 10 to 8 second cars. We ran 2 time trials, then paired up with cars that ran close in time. We had 2 rounds in the evening that were heads up with a pro tree.
The first time trial, I decided to run to the 1/8'th just to see how the track was. It spun at the hit the finally found traction. I clicked it off at the 1/8th for a 5.72.
The second time trial was a bit wild. Let's just say that the crowd loved it, and the wife didn't! The burnout got a bit sideways, but when I let off it grabbed and sent me into some wild back and forth antics as I tried to keep the car pointed the right way in a cloud of smoke that made it hard to see where the right was was. When she came out to back me up by the look on her face it was apparently somewhat exciting

Then the pass got really exciting - it came loose at the hit and went for the wall - I pedalled, straightened it out, hit it, and it decided to head for center line - I pedalled again and hit it only to have it strike the tires again - at this point I gave up and idled down the track. Apparently it was more exciting than the way I described it, but I didn't see that there was only 1 wheel on the ground several times
We decided to run the full 1/4 for the show rounds.
First round I was matched up with Gordon Crow in his new '33 Willys. We did long side by side burnouts backed up and did some dry hops and throttle wacks. We both had terrible trees, we both struck the tires at the hit. I backed out until the tires grabbed and hit it again. By this time he was out ahead of me. I reeled him in and caught him before the line with a 9.30.
Second round I was paired up with Steve Duber in another '33 Willys. He had been making decent all day, so I had my work cut out for me. The little Prefect decided to perform this time. It lauched at the hit, didn't spin, and I never saw the Willys in the other lane. 8.63 @ 154 - it was a nice final run to complete the day!
