Lol,...you nosey little buggers,..heres a little whiff,.....and lets just say Ive ran better at Bakersfield.
So my son Riley and I headed off to the track on Friday afternoon and got set up, we were so bored the rest of the night anticipating that there would have been alot of racers getting parked and would have lots of friends and people to chat with,..not the case I think there was like 12 rigs.
So back to the facts,..two qaulifying runs for saturday,..
1st run,..12 pm we roll up get fired ,do a good burnout, stage the car, launch and immediatly goes left, now this is the fourth time going the wrong way so it went as followed,..wheels up turning,.out of throttle, slight turn of steering wheel to the right, front wheels come back to earth, car instantly straightens out, hammer the throttle and out the back door with 9.48 but charging hard at 159 mph,.lol..throw the chute, whoa her down and click it off. tire pressur is off by 1 lb right to left, no heat on plugs,...go from a 105 main to a 115,.....
2nd rd Q,....2:30 pm...nice burnout get it stopped, put into reverse mode, push tranny button,..nothing,...in drive roll forward stop, put shifter into reverse, press trans button,.NO REVERSE,...put into first gear,...im sitting out at about 330-400ft, and need to get the car off the track as to not hold up the blower digger who is just returning from his burnout,.....I mash the throttle hikes the front wheels up grab second gear, and off the track I go in about 12 seconds.
I make the turn off click it off, unbuckle, and the blower car fully stages and makes his run,..no hold up by me,, that all I cared about...so I look down at the tranny and apparently while getting strapped in my left foot/BOOT must have been back far enough to have unplugged the transbrake wire, thus no reverse So now I am 0-2 on a full pull but I did whined up being #4 out of 6 because a two other cars never got down the track better than my 9.48 et,..
So one car completely left for home, so # 1 Q gets a bye first round and I race #2,..I dial a 7.99 not knowing were my car will run and only because that is the min. dial in allowed, my opponent dials a 7.25,.....
1st rd,...........good burnout,..car backs up...lol..stage drill the tree with a .413 light but by half track this blurr goes zinging by, so needless to say I lost 1st round and the car did not respond they way it should have by taken away 10 at the main running a 8.76@152,..something is wrong somewhere. We get back look things over plugs still say rich so I take the 115 out and put the 125 in it and take a shim out of the HS,..Now if that dont show some kind of change ET wise Im calling it quits...
2nd round,..for the losers.....I dial a 7.99 to my oponents 7.45 (who is Spud Miller injected on 85 % small block chevy) ,..I do a good burnout back up stage the car fall asleep at the light, launch it get going shes trucking good and by 600 foot Spud Miller in the Red Hot Chilli Pepper zings on by me and Spud ran a 7.48 on his 7.45 dial in,..sheech,...but I did manage to run 8.21@161 which was good enough for me,.but I still scence something is not right because this was better air ans DA of 1600ft as oppose to the hot rod reunion when it was 2600ft and I ran 8.06,...we get back and check it all out and it looks good so I decide to leave it alone, to see if the car will repeat itself,.....
3rd Round,....car was difficult to start and I whined up having to get pushed off and towed back around to the staging lanes where I got it fired up (twice)
I restrap in, and we pull up,...my turn,..Veneys Vega fires up and I`m on a single in the right lane,..now take in mind that because my cars prior history of going left, the left side wheelie bar has always been set a little higher than the right ,...I do a great burnout back up way past the line,..Kieth McCurdy my buddy motions me forward and I do about 4 or 5 dryhops to get there,...so I am there and Kieth runs for cover,..and as I roll into the beams I am thinking I will matt the throttle (launch rpm very high)..lol....Staged trans button on,.. light goes green rpms wound up tight release the button,.Whamm,..wheels are up two and ahalf feet taking off and veering a bit to the right,..let me say I have not seen that much Oregon Sky ever in a car...lol so the car is going right with the wheels up in the air and I decide to lift at about 40-50ft out ( I was hoping it was going to go straight)...car comes back down a twitch to the left and mash the throttle and run it out the back door,..cept this time it seemed to lose a little pull/ or power around 800 feet and I was just about to call it when it came back to life and pulled hard threw the lights,..I am really confused now..8.86@142,..something is definatly not working properly. Si I will pull the mag and fuel pump and have Spud Miller check them out and hopefuly finds my issue.
Riley and I had a great time ,..sold a few shirts ,..signed lots of hero cards,..met and had lots of conversations with many people who remembered this Veneys Vega well from 1972,..We had many people come and say this was there favorite car of the weekend, and Jim and Gene both said we did a great job and was welcomed back in the futrure,......so theres my weekend, sure would have liked to have got my first 7 second run, and it should have happend here.
