again on pbs i think maybe not ? caught an informercial last night selling dvds of all the acts that performed on the show... i remember sitting on the couch with my first real girlfriend at her parents house sitting through the news, and whatever else her parents were watching knowing that they would soon retire and leave us alone to watch midnight special

That show motivated me to go out and experience live music. What a resource of '70's culture! There, reportedly, exists a Grateful Dead/NRPS episode with Mickey Hart adjourning to the kitchen of the Brooklyn ballroom they were filming at....returning to the spacy jam and mic'ing up:frying bacon!

Great stuff. I would have bought the DVDs already if I had any confidence that I'd have time to watch them! bp

"The Midnight Special" and "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" were the "Shindig", "Hullaballoo" and "Where The Action Is" (60s rock shows) of the 70s...I rarely missed any of them..."Clap For The Wolfman" by the Guess Who always stood for the vibe that show had to me. I read Wolfman Jack's autobiography, and the party was so intense at that show, it was a miracle that all those bands were able to get on stage and perform...including the Wolfman...it was as crazy as it all looked, and the editing and sound-mixing was great...The Doobie Brothers played live, at the peak of the Tom Johnston era...T-Rex was taped, so were the Stones. Steely Dan played live. Jim Croce played live. It was LIVE....for the most part. Leon Russell made a jackass out of himself, but he had a lot of mojo back then from not only Mad Dogs & Englishmen, but from having been the bandleader on "Shindig" and most of Phil Spector's and Gary Lewis' hits in the 60s, but he came off as a stoned, overbearing jerk. War was great. Slade was OK, I wasn't a Slade guy, but they stomped. I could rave on, but I gotta find those DVDs, man...get out my leisure suit and shiny shirts with the collars that touched my shoulders...how cool it all was! Cheers, WC1

I remember those In Concert shows on TV. Way back when our family ran the Roller Rink, us kids worked there, and after closing we'd all go to this late night pizza place, eat, play pin ball and watch those cool rocks bands on the tube. Those are still great memories of those nights with the family!

"In Concert"!!!!! I'd forgotten about that great show! Unfortunately a lot of the 70s and almost all of the 80s are a blur in my memory...but that's where we saw those bands I mentioned...they didn't mess around...thanks for reminding me of all those great moments!!!! WC1

The "Midnight Special" was great. One of my buddies parents had a camping trailer and a bunch of us would have all night "parties" out there and watch the show. I remember one of my favorites was ELO doing Roll Over Bethoven. As for Clap For The Wolfman I picked up the Guess Who's greatest hits CD about 2 weeks ago at Wal Mart and I have been playing the heck out of it since. Also on XM radio they have a Wolfman Jack show that I have listened to a couple of times and it is pretty good! Mike
