Tom McCourry

This article is from the NHRA site. I remembered the name when I first read it when he and Tommy Ivo were affiliated. Rest in peace my friend and thank you for your contibutions to our sport.

Veteran racer McCourry passes away: Tom McCourry, a veteran drag racer and longtime friend of Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, “T.V. Tommy” Ivo, Tom “the Mongoose” McEwen, and other heroes of the sport, passed away May 5 he was 67.

McCourry grew up in Southern California and developed a strong passion for automobiles, custom cars and motorcycles. With Prudhomme and Ivo, he was a proud, longtime member of the Road Kings Car Club of Burbank, Calif., and owned several award winning hot rods.

One of the early pioneers in helping promote the sport, McCourry toured the United States competing in several NHRA events and was a member of the 1964 NHRA United States Drag Racing team with; Don Garlits, Ivo, Tony Nancy, and Bill Jenkins, which traveled to Europe to help generate interest in the sport.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., May 11 at Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA, 90068. Burial will follow the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam of Tom can be made to the Amanda Foundation, (310)278-2935), 351 N. Foothill Road, Beverly Hills, CA, 90210.

McCourry is survived by his wife, Lynda (Steele) McCourry, daughter Kim Johnson, and three grandchildren
