An extraordinary woman of immeasurable importance. A beacon of hope, now extinguished. Not a jet-setter, nor was a royal title prefixed to her name; all her life she stood for the strength and decency of the common people. Throughout her life, she suffered many slings and arrows, none with any merit or substance, but today she was ended by violence, which she steadfastly opposed. I feel this loss; I cannot imagine what my Pakistani friends must be feeling. God Bless her, and God Save Pakistan. WC1

Sorry to extend my vent...I knew this was coming. I knew it was going to happen when she went back. I could feel it and see it in her face. I dreaded the thought, but it was script. Throughout the troubled history of this beautiful place, debatably the greatest and most powerful, resourceful and potentially mainstream of all Third World countries, it has been one tumult after another. The current dictatorship at least provides sporadic measures of control, but even with a western alliance, there are still extremes, constantly on the brink of civil war in their society. I have long believed that the axis of peace and power in the Middle East rested in Pakistan's structural stability and their ties to the West. To lose Benazir Bhutto this way was a crushing blow to that fragile calm. She was a modern-day Joan of Arc. I will continue to pray for peace, and for Pakistan. WC1

What I'm trying to say is that I loved her.

The bastards finally got her. I hope that in her martyrdom, the Pakistani people rise up and set the country back on the right path. bp
