Charlie Greenway

A sad day for the Houston Music Scene. Charlie Greenway passed away Friday after a long and courageous battle with diabetes and its related maladies. He played Blues For Becky with Louisiana Boogie in 2004, and he was present at every benefit I ever went to, donating his powerful talent, charisma and that rich, gorgeous baritone voice and his skill on the keyboard to any good cause that would come up. I met Pee Wee Bowen at a benefit for Charlie a little over 2 years ago. Charlie's beautiful daughter died unexpectedly and we put together a benefit to raise some money to help him out with his expenses...Pee Wee played 2 sets after the Citykings. Charlie continued to perform in fine voice and chops right up to the end. His version of the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl" still rings in my memory. I was privileged to play a couple of dates with Louisiana Boogie, and Charlie was as kind and warm to me as if I were one of his family. His stature as a legend has been in place for many years, I was lucky to have known him and to have had the honor of sharing a stage with him. God rest Charlie. He sings in Heaven. WC1

I found a picture on Louisiana Boogie's website that Jim Shortt took and I assembled in Photoshop for Doug Ardoin (guitar player for the band, inducted into the South Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2002 for founding the Boogie Kings and guiding them to fame in this region)...Charlie is playing keyboards up front in this picture. For a couple of years, Doug took me under his wing. Doug had given up music for a career as an aerospace engineer at NASA...for 30 years he didn't play, he just concentrated on interplanetary exploration...he retired in 2000 after 35 years there and he walked right back into the Boogie Kings, but he started his own band shortly afterward and Charlie joined him...

Charlie and the boys were the backbone of many an act at Blues for Becky. RIP and they are wailing in heaven tonight. bp
