The great Issac Hayes passed away earlier today. It was ironic that I was listening to a couple of songs of his earlier today, Shaft and Never Can Say Goodbye.

He was a wonderful human being, immensely talented, complicated and diverse. His art is an institution of Soul music, spanning more than 5 decades even though he is gone at age 65. His style was unique, from the most basic boogies he wrote that were performed by Booker T and the MGs at Stax, to the awesome orchestral movements he composed, conducted and performed throughout his career. He did it all with a self-assured but not cocky sense of humor and down-to-earth, conversational lyricism that at times breached the surreal yet still came across in terms that I could relate to...I will miss that natural poetic smoothness combined with his unforgettable melodies. A lot of big-time rock stars paid very close attention to what Isaac Hayes did. His star will shine forever. Farewell from this dimension. WC1
