What the heck is a 'Pill'?

OK, time to get a bit red faced. Been announcing the drags for 19 years now and I'm gonna admit something I don't know (not too hard to pick something!) What the heck is a PILL? I hear racers talking about puttin a bigger pill in it, etc. What does that mean and what does that do? bp

Bill, it depends on the type of racecar they are talking about. If it is a mechanical fuel injected car, the main "PILL" is what controls the amout of fuel going to the engine.

If he says I am gonna lean on it and throw a bigger pill in there, he is going to go from 100 to a 110 pill. The bigger the number, the larger the hole for fuel to flow thru.

So in the above example, you need to remember Fuel Injection works under pressure, so it is backwards from a carb. The main "PILL" is actually what you are flowing back to the tank, or not putting into the engine. So by going to a larger hole, letting more fuel flow back to the tank. He is leaning out the engine to make more power.

Gator can explain about No2 pills for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, it sure does. It's great to hear that it affects different race cars in different ways. I've heard top alky guys talking about it and then I hear a door car guy, too... this helps to explain that. I'd love to hear more from Wally! bp

The thing about jets is just because its got a .030 hole doesnt mean it flows the same as another .030 hole. The entrance and exit into the hole affect flow. Enderle jets are of the square edge design and Kinsler is of the radius design are 2 examples. If you run one style of jet,it isnt prudent to mix brands as they flow different unless you are aware of your tune and how it would afffect it.

Leon is one talented tuner from the funny car wars!!

Good to have them here.

Leon is dead on..regarding the actual size and flow.

Nitrous tune ups are similar in that regard. (when you are stepping on it)
Our best fuel set-up (pump),was an 80-a enderle mechanical(belt) ,with a pill in the return.
Once we stabilized what constant flow we wanted,We could really tune the fuel going to the nitrous systems (and carbs)
no blips
controlling the fuel was the deal......

Bill...to me pill means jet...... Hell, I had the genius of Gordy Foust at my side.....(pretty sharp cookie)

Wally gives lots of credit out,,,,but let me tell you. I have spent a lot of time with my friend and he is a very sharp cookie himself!

He knows how the whole program works, and you can see how well he did for his whole career! Sharp Cookie in the group is Wally Bell for my money.
