Tommy Ivo is credited with the first five second run in drag racing history. Ivo accomplished this feat at a match race at Keystone Dragway in Pennsylvania against the StarrLiner TF dragster of Alan Starr. Because it happened at a match race and not at a national event, Ivo's run was disputed by many. However, Ivo clocked a tire-hazing 6.20, a 6.06 and a 5.97 at speeds no slower than 232 mph. Fast forward to the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, California, only two months later. The conditions were right and the track was great. The late Mike Snively took the beautiful Top Fuel dragster of “Diamond Jim” Annin to NHRA's first official five second pass with a great 5.97/235 in the semi-finals. In the final round of the same race, Don Moody lowered the mark further with a superb 5.91.
