Last of the Mohicans

When Pro Comp was formed in late 1973, one of the classes included was the injected nitro A/FC class, which had been around since the invention of funny cars. By 1975, A/FC cars mostly died out as most flopper racers converted to the more user friendly blown alcohol engines in the BB/FC class. Some racers stuck with the injected nitro combo, including John Hughes, Ron Rice, and pictured Northwestern team of Grant Springer & Barry Price. S & P ran both an A/FC Vega and this Chevy-powered Corvette into the early eighties, hitting a best of 7.01 at nearly 200 mph using a unique tunnel ram manifold topped with a "Bugcatcher" injector hat. Their ET and MPH records for the breed would stand for no less than seventeen years until IHRA briefly legalized the unblown nitro floppers to run in their Alcohol Funny Car division in 1997. Mike Ditty caught the 'Vette on a burnout at Portland International Raceway.
