Harvey and Thomas Going Pro Mod Racing

By Danny White

2005 Outlaw Top Sportsman champion Heath Harvey has made the move to Pro Modified. Harvey will be driving the Thomas Motorsports/J.P. Harvey Motors entry that he took to the championship. The Pontiac Grand Am was built by famed chassis builder and racer Kim Smith in mid-nineties for Pro Modified. The car has passed through a couple of owners since it was built. In 2005 Jeff Thomas and Heath Harvey pooled their resources to run the car in Outlaw Top Sportsman. Harvey did an excellent job driving his first doorslammer. Harvey’s driving and Thomas’ tuning proved to be a great partnership. The engine out of Harvey’s dragster ran 4.60s on a single shot and a Powerglide transmission.

For 2006, the team sold that winning combo for a 707 inch Fulton built Pontiac and Lenco transmission. Ken and Jeff Thomas overhauled the engine in the Thomas Racing Engines shop. The team also redid the nitrous system on the car. They expect to match the performance of Jeff’s father Ken and his Pro Mod Firebird, who ran an awesome 4.14 last year. The Thomas Motorsports/J.P. Harvey Motors Grand Am has run as quick as 4.40 in the distant past. The team plans to run Texas Outlaw Pro Mod Association races along with the other Thomas Motorsports Pro Mod. Looks like this Texas team is ready to jump into the ongoing blower/nitrous wars in the TOPMA series.
