A new drag racing group made its public debut at Harry Hronas’ Redline Raceway Saturday night. The Southwest Junior Fueler Circuit is headed up by racer Mike Milsap. The group is trying to get started in the Texas area and its goal to get vintage style injected slingshots to race with them. Seven cars made the group’s first ever race. The cars ran two qualifying rounds and a “Chicago Style” first round to see who would race for the win.

Mike Milsap led all qualifiers with a 4.93 in his Sachse Rod Shop dragster. Rich Marshall was second at 5.11 in his much updated, but very immaculate Ed Mabry slingshot. This might be the most detailed dragster around! Rich Brady was next in the Mallory, Brady & Fields dragster with a 5.21. This is an original Don Long car that was a former Roland Leong “Hawaiian.” Al Mallory raced the car as A/FD in the seventies with the injected nitro circuit. Mike Mauldin from Wylie, Texas ran a 5.37 in his vintage ‘69 Beeman built dragster for the number four spot. Buster Johnson in the “Rollin’ Stone” dragster ran a 5.48 for fifth. Don Scott got the number six spot with a 5.60. In the final position was Steve Duncan in the classic “Foolish Pleasure” with a 6.37. “Foolish Pleasure” is the former Robert Turner driven A/FD of Ron Muncy.

The “Chicago Style” first round began with Mike Milsap taking a solo pass of 4.95 in the Sachse Rod Shop dragster. Ricky Marshall won the next pairing with a solid 5.13 to beat Steve Duncan’s 6.38. Rich Brady won his round with a 5.21 over Don Scott’s shutoff 7.94. The first round ended with Mike Mauldin taking a close win over Buster Johnson, 5.40 to 5.46.

In the final round, it would be Mike Milsap racing Ricky Marshall. Milsap was the only car in the fours at this race, but Marshall was going to do his best to upset the Sachse Rod Shop machine. The two came to the starting line at 12:30 with a hint of nitro in the air. Milsap switched to the classic open face helmet and face mask of the past. Marshall pulled out a 5.05 but it was not enough to beat Mike Milsap’s 4.93.

The 4.93 was good enough for low elapsed time and the first ever win for the Southwest Junior Fuel Circuit. I hope the circuit off takes because they put on a good show in their first race. Thanks go to Jerry Lee Goss at Redline Raceway for letting these cars put on their race at Caddo Mills. Go to www.redlineraceway.com to see what shows are forthcoming.
