Drag Racing Stories
Farewell, Ray Russell
Photo by Rick Oldfield ~ Text by Danny White
Last week I received word that Ray Russell had passed away due to cancer. Jana Russell-Laurent wrote me an email saying that her father was a fan of the Draglist. I can surely say, even though I did not know him personally, that I was a big Brown & Russell fan. The Texas team has given me some great racing memories. Some of those memories were of the great Anglia they raced in Pro Comp and a particularly wild run at Tyler I-20 Raceway. I remember a match race in Prescott, Arkansas, where everybody hung out with Frank Cook leaving Brown & Russell alone, including the families of Brown & Russell! The final memory I will pass along was that of a race in which James Brown stopped the car on the first turnoff at Green Valley in a 40 MPH headwind after a 200 MPH run! Ray Russell will be remembered as a great tuner who was very popular with fellow racers and fans.
