DIXON WINS AGAIN ON FATHER’S DAY

Worsham, Line and Brown also claim victories at K&N Filters Supernationals

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – Larry Dixon extended his Father’s Day winning streak to five consecutive years by racing to victory Sunday at the K&N Filters Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Del Worsham, Jason Line and Antron Brown also were winners at the $2 million race, the 11th of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

Dixon celebrated the special victory with wife Allison and children Donovan and Alanna after posting a final round performance of 4.533 seconds at 329.91 mph in his Miller Lite dragster to outrun Dave Grubnic, whose Zantrex-3 dragster lost traction at the start.

The victory moves two-time world champion Dixon into third place in the POWERade Series point standings, 68 behind leader Doug Kalitta. Dixon advanced to the final round with wins over Mitch King, Cory McClenathan and Kalitta.

“My kids attacked me with that silly string stuff in the winner’s circle,” said Dixon of his 37th career victory, second of the season. “It’s unbelievable from my vantage point to win again on Father’s Day. I am not sure why, but it’s cool. Win, lose or draw at the end of the day I have my family with me and that’s the most important thing.”

Worsham earned his first victory of the season and the 20th of his career by holding off Ron Capps in the Funny Car final. Worsham drove his Checker Schuck’s Kragen Chevy Monte Carlo to a 4.866 at 321.19 to edge Capps, whose Brut Dodge Stratus posted a 4.911 at 315.49.

“This is very satisfying for the team because last year we had success and everyone has been asking about our performance this year, what was going on and when we were going to turn it around,” said Worsham, who beat Tony Bartone, John Force and Robert Hight in earlier rounds. “That had been weighing heavily on the team. But today, we pulled together to win.”

Line claimed his second consecutive Pro Stock victory and third of the season when he passed Warren Johnson at the finish line. Line’s Summit Racing Pontiac ran 6.692 at 205.98 for his seventh career win, while Johnson recorded a 6.714 at 207.50, in his GM Performance Parts Pontiac.

“The team did a great job, the car was like a bracket car,” said Line, who defeated Greg Stanfield, teammate Greg Anderson and Larry Morgan to advance to the final. “This is one of the best race cars I’ve ever been in. We never really got ahold of the race track during qualifying but today we had some great runs and caught up to the track.”

Local Pro Stock Motorcycle favorite Antron Brown, from nearby Chesterfield, also won for the first time this season. Brown rode his U.S. Army Suzuki to a 7.169 at 184.55 to overcome a quicker start by Karen Stoffer, who finished in 7.238 at 186.90 on her Geico Suzuki.

Brown became the sixth different winner this season in the two-wheel category in as many races. He defeated Scott Valetti, Geno Scali, and teammate Angelle Sampey to advance to the final round.

“It feels great to win here in front of all my family and friends and to win on Father’s Day,” said Brown of his 14th career victory and his second at his home track. “We still have some work to do, but all the late hours that my crew has been putting in is paying off. The championship fight has just begun. It’s going to be a dogfight from here on out to win this championship.”

The NHRA POWERade Series continues with the ninth annual Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals, June 24-26 at Gateway International Raceway, Madison, Ill.
