Smith Wins, Scott DNQs in Kennedale Pro Mod Action

By Danny White and Celeste Smith

The Texas Outlaw Pro Modified Association returned to Kennedale’s Texas Raceway for the race held on the second Friday of each month. As expected, hot August weather greeted the 16 teams that came to race.

After two sessions of qualifying, Randy Brewer was the number one qualifier with a 4.200, 173 in the FBS Racing AMX. Brewer was fresh off a win in Tulsa last week. Troy Critchley took the AMS Second Hammer Corvette to the number spot with a 4.225, 169. Number three was the Texas Bounty Hunter, Gaylen “Mr. TBH” Smith, with a 4.251, 170. Rounding out the top half of the field was Ken Thomas in his nitrous boosted Firebird with a 4.258, 170.

Returning after a year and half hiatus from Pro Mods was Matt “Big Daddy” Jones with a 4.263, 170 in his blown Corvette. Perry Dunn garnered the number sixth spot in the Fire Chicken Trans Am at a 4.313. Frankie “The Mad Man” Taylor was number seven with a 4.314, 158 in his Vette. Rounding out the tough field was Thomas “Tom Slick” Myers with a solid 4.34, 163.

The first alternate was Ronnie Niswanger with a 4.34, 167 in his blown Nova. Booby Booth had troubles in qualifying, running only a 4.506, 161 in his new Vette. Booth later came back to run 4.18 on a time run! The team of Eric Sandlin & Jackie Deaver was next with a 4.513, 159. Outlaw Top Sportsman racer David Baldwin ran 4.513, 156 in his 55 Chevy. Fellow OTS racer Rickey Cates got the Dangerous Toy to run 4.547, 159 for the number 13 slot. Another OTS racer, H.T. Wilson, got his Camaro to run a 4.593, 164 for number 14. The number 15 car was the shock of night as Clyde Scott was a DNQ with a 4.592, 165 best in the Texas’ Most Wanted Corvette. Charlie Matthews was in the number 16 spot with a 4.660, 151 pass in his Firebird.

The first round began with Thomas Myers taking an easy win when Randy Brewer rolled through the lights. Myers ran a 4.30, 166 for the win. Next up were Thomas and Jones. Ken Thomas was trying to cut the eyes out of tree but came up with a .003 redlight. Thomas ran it out to 4.247, while Jones shut off at 6.248. Frankie Taylor stepped up to a 4.193 but it was not enough for Critchley’s Low ET of 4.163. The last pair was anticlimactic when Dunn broke off the line and Smith ran 4.232 for the win.

The semifinals produced two great races. Matt Jones ran a 4.292, 171 in defeating Myers’ 4.352, 162. Smith pulled a holeshot win over Critchley with a 4.184 for Smith and close 4.169 for Troy. The finals were as Matt Jones had boldly predicted on www.texasoutlawracing.com – he would face Gaylen Smith in the finals.

The race was decided quickly as Jones had problems and left with a .281 redlight but still ran a 4.190. Gaylen ran a 4.20, 169 for his first win of the year.
