El Toro!

Photos by Thomas Nagy
Text by Danny White and Bret Kepner

Thomas Nagy took these shots of Bob Sweatt's El Toro fuel altered at US 131 Dragway during one of the famous Popular Hot Rodding Events. Sweatt's altered was spit and polished to a T. The car evidently did as much time on the car show circuit as the dragstrip. When on the dragstrip the car ran known best times in the low sevens.

Sweatt's El Toro is one of only two drag racing machines to have ever won the prestigious Ridler Award at the Detroit Autorama. The 1976 Ridler winner was campaigned as a blown fuel altered until Sweatt put Doug Gordon in the seat for NHRA Div. III AA/A competition. The car was sold in 1978 and was parked for six seasons before being repainted black and renamed "Taboo". The car was quickly purchased by Rick Cortino of Illinois who, under the same paint scheme and name, raced the altered from the late '80s through the '90s in IHRA's Top Sportsman and Top Dragster divisions while making infrequent match race appearances. Although now competing with a different chassis in TAFC, Cortino still owns the original El Toro.
