ADRL Drag Illustrated Dragapalooza IV - Pro Nitrous
Text by Danny White
The nitrous cars took a liking to the great air at Baytown but the loss of two session meant the setup had to be right. Pat Stoken took the top spot in the field with a 3.986 186.56 in his Camaro. Stoken was not the quickest nitrous car at the Dragapalooza that belonged to Billy Harper. Harper had brought his new Viper to Baytown to test while being entered in the Pro Extreme Class and running his tried and true car in Pro Nitrous. He ran the first session in both classes but unloaded a 3.929 187.13 in the new car. Harper promptly withdrew the Pro Nitrous entry and entered the new car in the Pro Nitrous field negating the 3.92 run in PX that would have landed him third.
Other notable runs were Harold Martin's best ever of 4.005 in the National Guard Pontiac. Jim Halsey was right behind with a 4.009 in his Camaro. Shannon Jenkins ran a 4.068 in Mike Castellana's beautiful new Firebird. Todd Tutterow made his debut in Randy Weatherford's Cavalier with a 4.118 180.36. Harper ran a 4.19 177.42 in his one shot effort to get into the field. Doug Riesterer ended up on the bump with a troubled 4.579 155.06 in his three second Camaro. Teams not making the field were Keith Baker, Kenny Rucker, Steve Vick, Terry Murphy and Owen Chester.
Stan Allen in the Bankston Boyz Camaro won the first pairing 4.261 174.26 after Todd Tutterow suffered a fire in the WS Construction Cavalier. It was the battle of Alabama next as Shannon Jenkins best Johnny Pilcher 4.389 153.60 to 5.727 85.50. Rickie Smith broke into the three's for the first time with a 3.993 defeat of Delon Joseph's 4.144 177.32 in the Chambers Bros Corvette. Dennis Radford also broke into the three's for the first time with a 3.991 182.90 defeat of Tim Savell who trailed with a 4.226 173.03 in the Bankston Boyz Camaro.
Randy Weatherford had luck on his side when his 5.999 77.17 got the win due to Billy Harper crossing the center line after getting up on two wheels. Jim Halsey ran a consistent 4.004 185.79 to win over Burton Auxier's 4.209 170.41. Harold Martin ran a great 4.05 to beat the world champ Jamie Hancock and his 4.531 169.31. Pat Stoken put away Doug Riesterer 4.019 187.70 to 4.413 174.87 to end the first round of eliminations.
Randy Weatherford beat Dennis Radford 4.03 180.30 to 4.225 176.29 in the first pairing of the second round. Jim Halsey's 4.020 184.77 just got by Rickie Smith's 4.043 182.88 in the next race. Both Harold Martin and Shannon Jenkins both pedaled in the next race with Martin winning 4.39 173.32 to the 4.78 119.92 of Jenkins. Pat Stoken fell off to a 4.420 176.71 but it was enough to beat Stan Allen's 4.507 162.04.
Pat Stoken was taken out in the first race of the semis when his off pace 6.764 73.64 was easy beat by Randy Weatherford's 4.372 160.37. Jim Halsey did not slow when his 4.037 185.43 beat the coasting 5.114 99.32 of Harold Martin.
Jim Halsey won the final with a 4.030 to Randy Weatherford's very close 4.048 180.12 in his new Camaro.
