The UK’s Supercharged Outlaws
Text & Photos by Alan Currans
The Supercharged Outlaws are fast becoming one of the most popular classes here in the UK. The essence of the rules are simple - you must run a blower, you must be able to run under 10 seconds, and your car must meet the safety requirements. This wide drafting of the regulations has resulted in an eclectic mix of machinery from slingshot dragsters, altered and doorslammers including some street-legal cars. The formula seems to be working well because the numbers of Outlaws is actually increasing which certainly bucks the current gloomy economic trend.
The season is now over and I thought I would bring you some pictures of the top six cars in the championship.
#1 Vic Hammond’s ‘Speed Demon’
Sam Freeman does most of the driving of this lovely imported car although Vic likes to keep his hand in as well. To say this team is experienced is a massive under-statement – they have been round the block so many times they must be giddy. The result is a best of 7.48/197 and a super consistent car that is easy on parts and the result is the number one slot for 2012. (They get two pictures for coming first)
#2 Alec Coe’s ‘Shy Talker’
Alec Coe (aka the ‘Old Git’) of Mad ‘Rs Drag Racing is another highly experienced racer. His cracking rail was built in the UK by Johnny Hall and Bill Felstead and Alec’s Crew Chief Kevin Mortimer keeps the car running sweetly. Alec’s ambition is to run a six at over 200mph and he only has half a second and a few miles per hour to go with a current best of 7.52/184 in order to realize his dream.
#3 Paul Watts’ ‘No Easy Pick-Up’
Paul has been campaigning his potent 565 inch 8.9 second step-side pick-up truck very successfully for a number of years although 2012 will probably be its last year. Fortunately he is well advanced with another project which promises to be even better!
#4 Andy Hadfield’s Twister
Andy has what you might term an uninhibited driving style as the following illustration proves. Power is provided by a whopping 598 cubic inch BBC. This car, which has a best of 8 seconds dead, is regularly driven on the street although hopefully with all four wheels on the ground for most of the time. The chassis is tagged to 7.50 seconds so you can see which way the wind is blowing here.
# 5 Richard Davies’ Willys
C
oming in at number five is
Richard Davies’ immaculate Willys which runs regular 9.9 second
elapsed times
which goes to prove that consistency is as important as raw speed.
#6 Lee Gallimore’s ‘Red Mist’
Lee Gallimore’s lovely altered runs all the way down to 7.3 seconds and is a real crowd-pleaser to boot. This performance is outstanding when you consider that the engine is only 350 cubes.
All of the above pictures were taken at Shakespeare County Raceway – the home of sportsman racing in the UK.
I hope you have enjoyed looking at the pictures.
