DELTA RACER COWIE SCORES THIRD WIN IN THREE RACES AT MISSION RACEWAY PARK

MISSION, B.C. (May 24, 2009) – Delta resident Shawn Cowie won his third race of the year in Top Alcohol Dragster at the Lordco BC Nationals, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, at Mission Raceway Park. Brian Hough, Junction City, Ore., joined Cowie in the winner’s circle after scoring the Top Alcohol Funny Car win and Rob Harrison of North Vancouver earned the Comp Eliminator trophy.

Cowie, who won out-of-division races in Phoenix and Las Vegas, started the day from the No. 2 qualifying spot. He beat High River, Alb., racer Ashley Bart in the opening round and in the semis he blasted a 5.290-second, 271.08 mph pass to beat Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash. In the final, Cowie ran 5.330 seconds at 270.10 mph to beat Dale Carlson of Olympia, Wash.

Hough was event’s No. 1 qualifier and due to the odd number of Top Alcohol Funny Cars in competition, he had a bye run in the first round then, in the semis and the final round, his competitors red-lighted. First it was Rob Atchison, London, Ont., and in the final it was John Evanchuk, Edmonton, Alb.

Harrison qualified in the No. 16 spot and in the end he squared off against Brandon Huhtala of Puyallup, Wash. Harrison ran his ’05 Cavalier to a 7.779-second, 153.11 mph lap to Huhtala’s 7.529-second, 154.13 mph effort in his ’97 Cutlass.

Jody Lang, another Puyallup resident, got the win in Super Stock, driving his ’81 Malibu to the win over Casey Setter, Red Deer, Alb. Greg Kielman, Vancouver, Wash., drove to the Stock Eliminator win in his ’69 Camaro, beating out Bill Bushmaker, Auburn, Wash., in a ’76 Roadrunner. Super Comp racer Geoff Hughes, Eagle, Idaho, jettisoned Chuck Linne, Port Orchard, Wash., in the final and in Super Gas, Ken Heard, Ridgefield, Wash., beat Dave Kelly, Walla Walla, Wash., in the final. Larry Miner, Sedro-Wolley, Wash., won in Super Street, ousting Dudley Gee, Canby, Ore., in the final round. The Top Sportsman final was a battle between two Snohomish, Wash., racers. Randy Johnson wheeled his ’04 Cavalier to the win over Tony Hopkins in a ’97 Firebird. Jon Riedel, Arlington, Wash., got the Top Dragster win when Wes Garvin, Kennewick, Wash., was unable to make the call and Jeff Havens, Yakima, Wash., beat Surry resident Al Omond in the final of Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson. In exhibition categories run this weekend, Damien Cowden, Victoria, B.C., won in Top Fuel Harley and Jime Behnke, Coquitlam, B.C., won in Super Pro.

Northwest division racers head to Spokane, Wash., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Spokane County Raceway will hold its first Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 12-14.
