The Texas Timing Association hosted their first annual “Texas Nitro Nostalgia” event on May 5th (or as we called it, cinco de nitro) at San Antonio Raceway featuring the top nostalgia drag racing circuits of the southwest. The Painless Performance Outlaw Fuel Altered Association, Southwest Junior Fuel Association and Texas Blown Fuel Associations held points races along with a few cacklefests and exhibition runs by local favorites including Bobby Rex’s “Mexican Revolution” driven by Kebin Kinsley and Donnie Anderson’s “Summer of Love” Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragster.
Under a typical blistering May afternoon Texas sun, the call went out to get the show started with the feature line-up as the first round of qualifying was underway for the OFAA, SWJFA and TBFA circuits. Jimmy Jones led the Outlaw Fuel Altered Association field with a 4.003 pass in the “Texas Tremor” blown alcohol machine. Jones looked to be a favorite fresh off his win the weekend before at Texas Raceway, as the OFAA series was in the second half of back to back race weekends.

Ted McCord Texas Blown Fuel Number One Qualifier
Ricky Marshall wheeled his Bob McKray powered small block Chevy junior fuel dragster to a 7.30 at 180 mph to qualify number one in the Southwest Junior Fuel Association for the second time this season. Ted McCord clicked off a 7.65 at 163 mph in the Brown & McCord “Senior Moment” blown front engine dragster to take the top spot in the Texas Blown Fuel Association as the qualifying rounds were completed and teams returned to the pits to prepare for eliminations.

Jimmy Jones Outlaw Fuel Altered Number One Qualifier
As the rounds dwindled down, number one qualifier Jimmy Jones found himself in a match-up with Terry Brian in the final of the Outlaw Fuel Altered program. Brian and Jones had both been in a final round once this season, both fielding high horsepower blown alcohol machines capable of high three second runs in the eighth mile.
As the cars crept into the beams, the ambers flashed and Jones was off the line first and appeared to be in the lead as the cars crossed the 330’ mark. Shortly after, Jones lifted and Brian pulled ahead to take the stripe with a stout 3.93 at 184 mph to Jones’ 4.38 at 124 mph. In what would have surely been a side by side three second final, a broken air line kept Jones’ machine from shifting and Brian capitalized on the opportunity, clicking off his best pass of the night and earning the “II N’Tense” team their first win of the 2012 racing season.

Ricky Marshall Junior Fuel Winner
In the Southwest Junior Fuel Association, number one qualifier Ricky Marshall squared off with veteran Ron Muncy. Muncy’s “Foolish Pleasure III” junior fueler was off the line first by a huge margin as Marshall now had to hope he had enough horsepower to drive around Muncy. The cars were side by side at the eighth mile and at the strip Marshall took the win with a 7.37 at 166 mph to Muncy’s 8.22 at 159 mph. This marked Ricky Marshall’s first win of the season and kept his place at the top of the points standings in the SWJFA series.

Steve Matthews Texas Blown Fuel Winner
Steve Matthews and Chris Stouffer advanced to the final round in Texas Blown Fuel competition, this a 7.60 quarter mile indexed class featuring blown front engine dragsters and altereds. Matthews was off the line first and never trailed in this one, taking the win with a 7.62 at 145 mph to Stouffer’s close 7.67 at 165 mph. With his win, Matthews and company assumed the points lead in the TBFA standings and proudly returned home to Oklahoma with a big win in San Antonio.

It was a successful outing for the Texas Timing Association, racers and of course fans who came out to enjoy a nostalgic day at the drags. Congratulations to all the winners of the “Texas Nitro Nostalgia” event in San Antonio and good luck to the series competitors as they continue to put on exciting old school drag races and battle for Championships down in the lone star state.
