US Male, Nichols Split Fuel Funny Car Match at Capitol
By Bill Pratt
Phil Burkhart in Nick Boninfante's US Male Ford Mustang II and Steve
Nichols in his pure Chevy Camaro split a fuel funny car match race at
Capitol Raceway in Crofton, Maryland, Saturday. Marty Danko won a blown
altered match over Mike Hall's venerable Shenandoah entry, and young
Kevin Gresson won the Nostalgia Super Stock title over a great field.
Burkhart erased a massive Steve Nichols holeshot in round one, barely
passing the Chevy in the lights with a stunning 5.94 at 241.93 to 6.07,
233.76. Nichols evened the score in a final match, running a consistent
6.12, 232.63 while Phil Burkhart was shaking his brains out and
shutting off on a run that the incrementals indicated was headed for
the 5.70s. Look for dozens of photos and more info later today.
