WEATHER FORCES POSTPONEMENT OF IHRA PRO-AM EVENT AT ROCKINGHAM DRAGWAY

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – The promise of a record-breaking weekend of IHRA Pro-Am drag racing fell victim to weather Friday as rain and an unfavorable weekend forcecast forced Rockingham Dragway’s postponement of the season-opening three-day points meet until the weekend of June 19-21.

“It was a tough decision and a tough way to start the season,” said Rockingham owner Steve Earwood.   “It’s a no win deal when you’re dealing with weather but, in this economy, we felt like the worst case scenario would be to ask everyone to sit around for three days hoping for a miracle and then still send them home without turning a tire.

“By making a decision this early, before most of our racers have started their travel, maybe we can save them the gas, motel and meal money for another time.”

The Carolinas’ fastest racetrck was to have played host to more than 400 IHRA racers competing in eight Pro-Am categories including Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Top Stock.  Friday’s abbreviated schedule was to include a test-and-tune session restricted to Summer Series drivers.  Actual qualifying, time trials and national record attempts were not scheduled to begin until Saturday.

Postponing the event was especially frustrating for Earwood, who had to pull the plug on the final day of last week’s  Rock Batteries Spring Blast because of rain.

Because of an ambitious spring schedule that includes next week’s TCI Twin Tens Pro Street race, June was the earliest available date to re-schedule the Pro Am.  The March schedule also includes the first Holcomb Motorsports Fastest Street Cars Shootout (March 20-22), the first of four Phantasm Motorsports Street Wars featuring Insane Performance Real Street (March 15) and the March 27-29 Honda-Suzuki of Sanford Spring Open, first event in the 2009 Mickey Thompson Performance Tires MiRock Superbike Series.

“The worst part is that it was going to be an incredible show for the fans,” Earwood said.  “If you love early model hemi Dodges and Plymouths like I do, ’65 Ford Mustangs, ’69 Camaros, all of those classic muscle cars, they all seem like they wound up in Pro-Am drag racing.”

The re-scheduled event will operate on the original schedule, Earwood said, with a test-and-tune on Friday, qualifying and record runs on Saturday and eliminations on Sunday.
