Photos by Gena White

Here are the non qualifier's at the ADRL Quarter Max Memphis Drags. It took an amazing 3.90 to get into the Pro Extreme field. These racers tried hard but fell short.

Mike Neal ran his best ever run in Memphis with the family’s BAE powered Lumina. Neal ran a wild and twisting 3.90 188.51 run that landed him the first alternate spot. The crash of Dan Bandish allowed Neal to take his spot Saturday evening. Neal ran a 3.976 185.64 but was not enough to beat Jason Scruggs 3.69 run.

Mike Bell almost made the field in Roy Hill’s PSI Blown-BAE powered Mustang.  The 3.912 193.93 was good enough for the eighteenth spot in Memphis. The team is still debugging the screw blower combo that they debut late last year at Ennis.

John Stanley came to Memphis with a car that for the most part untested. The Weiss & Stanley team had accident at Cecil County prompting some hasty repairs for the brand new car. The team made steady improvements with the team almost making the field with a 3.916 188.89. The run good for number nineteen will give them something to build on for their next race.

The Roger Henson owned Widowmaker team has tried many new things this year with out much success. The trend continued in Memphis as Bubba Stanton suffered two major engine failures on Friday. The team regrouped on Saturday running a 3.952 192.19 best. The run was good for the number twentieth spot and was the best run for the team this year.

Homestate racer Dwayne Watkins tried hard to make the tough Memphis field in his flamed blue 57 Chevrolet. Watkins had tire shake issue on several runs with his Chevy powered racer. The best Watkins could run was a 3.970 196 for the twenty-first spot.

Wes Johnston like Bubba Stanton has been struggling all year to this point. Johnston was the Pro Extreme runner up last year in the Battle of the Belts, but has not qualified so far this year. The Hanning Racing team was able to make it down track under power at Memphis. The 53 Corvette ran a 4.018 178.78 best for the number twenty-two spot.

Bil Clanton made only one run in Memphis it was unforgettable. The Big Money team of the Clanton’s had skipped testing and ran their first run Friday night. Bil began the run good but ended hitting the wall. Clanton’s Stude was on fire and due to the quick action of Tommy D’Aprile and one of his crew he was pulled from the car without injury. Clanton ran a 4.052 153.51 on the run good for the number twenty-three spot.

Newcomer Neal Wantye entered his second ADRL race ever at Memphis. The Kentucky based racer made a good 4.07 188.86 run in his BAE power Mustang. That run earned him the number twenty-four spot in the field.

Elliot Thompson made the run of his short Pro Extreme career at Memphis. The team has been unable to make a complete run until now.   The 4.11 179.23 was more than a ½ second quicker than the team’s previous best ironically run here in testing.   The Alan Pittman built Corvette earned the twenty five spot.

Brandon Snider and the Lil’ Evil are still sorting out the teams Camaro that was purchased from Mike Knowles. The 4.117 184 run was good for the twenty six spot. Look for the team to return to its 3 second potential in the future.

Randy Hipp, a Arkansas Outlaw regular, made his ADRL debut in his homebuilt Corvette. The BAE powered Corvette with a Lencodrive ran a 4.17 174 run in qualifying. The run was good enough for the  twenty seventh spot.

Don Wootton made improvements in his injected nitro Camaro at Memphis.   The Joe Mondon tuned car made its best run ever at 4.19 at a whopping 190 MPH. The run was very soft according to Mondon with much more left in the tuneup.

Arkansas Outlaw racer Micheal Browning out of Little Rock made his ADRL debut in Memphis. The wild flamed Hemi powered Willys that Browning built himself ran a 4.24 152 best. The Willys has since ran a 4.06 to show the team’s potential.

Wesley Jones returned to the ADRL after his scary fire he suffered at Ennis. The fire caused almost a total rebuild for the car to race again. The team had problems in Memphis as the Vicksburg, MS based racer ran a 4.09 best.

Gaylen Smith won the opening race at the new Dallas Raceway coming into Memphis. The team hopes were high as Smith became the seventh PM to run 200 MPH in the eighth mile backed with 3.80’s runs. The team had nothing but trouble in Memphis with wheelstands and tire spin. The Jeffers built Texas Bounty Hunter Cuda ran a pedaling 4.64 181.34 best for the number thirty one spot.

Ed Hoover and Paul Trussell debut a beautiful new Camaro in Memphis. The team was still applying lettering on the car Friday morning! The team suffered the new car blues suffering through both tireshake and excessive spin. The best the team could do was a 5.477 102.63.

Paul Gibbs brought his Cuda to Memphis for his 2009 ADRL debut.   Gibbs ran in the 4.20’s testing the Cuda Friday. Paul Gibbs crashed in the lone qualifying session Friday night in his beautiful Jeffers’ built Cuda.
