ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE TO YORK

July 3, 2010 -  The annual pilgrimage to drag racing enthusiasts from the 50's, 60's, and 70's and beyond occurs at the York Expo Center, York Fairgrounds on July 9th and 10th. The pioneers of the sport meet annually to celebrate the greatest days in drag racing.

The Legends of drag racing greet their many fans and friends that they raced against and the former York US 30 Dragway staff and management come together to reminisce the great days at one of the nation's greatest drag racing venues in the country, the world famous York US 30 Dragway which closed some 31 years ago. The memories run deep and camaraderie abounds as many of the greatest of the greats appear for their annual pilgrimage to York.

This year's 9th annual event will feature some recently completed restorations of famous race cars that charged down the quarter mile at York on many occasions. Ronnie Evans of Gilbertsville has recreated the '61 Old Reliable Chevrolet that opened a performance era for the late Dave Strickler of York and Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins as the team went on to lay claim to many honors with the famous "Old Reliable" entries. The show features a Tribute to Junior Stock with the first showing of the newly restored Patrick Bros. "In-Bomber" '57 Chevy. The car won it's class at the 1968 Indy Nationals and was parked three years later. The restoration has taken 3 years and has been restored to exactly as raced.

The Jim & Alison Lee top fuel dragster will make it's debut by owner Brian Beattie. The former owners and driver, Tom Raley will be on hand for this special occasion. Ken Goosey of Arvada, Colorado will debut the Ronnie Sox '64 Mercury Comet A/FX "tribute car", Marco DeCesaris will likewise debut the Bill Drevo '68 Camaro Z28 "Quicksilver" that tripped the starting beams at York to record performances, others to deck the halls are Jack Werst's Superbird, and Kenny Goodell's funny car making their first appearances. A potpourri of performance will highlight the two days.

The Central Pennsylvania Model Car Club will present a Make and Take model building "free" to children 12 and under for both days. Friday hours are 5 p.m to 7 p.m. and Saturday 2 p.m, until 4 p.m. The models are 1:25 scale snap-it models and are provided to all entrants to be built and taken home with the aid of their parents.

The show is an annual fund raiser for the York County SPCA and will feature a Memorabilia Auction on Saturday beginning at 5:30 along with proceeds from voting canisters that are placed at each entry. Entry with the largest contributions will be crowned the People's Choice for the show. The show will also support the Springettsbury Police Department K9 Unit in replacing their fallen hero that was recently lost while gallantly serving us. Contributions will support the acquisition of Petro and the local law enforcement community.

The Cruisin' Into Summer cruise in will be held on the West Plaza on Friday from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. A special HHR jamboree will be featured with awards for the top three. A Top Five award schedule Friday for the cruise-in. The Cruisin' Columbia staff will be in charge of the cruise-in activities which will include Best of Show, Street Rod, Muscle Car, Special Interest, and Truck.
