Drag Racing’s princess of pace, Amanda Shepherd
proved that Top Fuel dragsters, can either be a 500 km/h rocket ship or a
volatile nitro bomb, when a massive explosion ended her chances of qualifying
in tomorrows Karcher Nitro Champs presented by Shannons Insurance.
Three time ANDRA Top Fuel national champion Phil Read sits in pole position for
Sunday eliminations, as five different drivers broke into the fast four-second
bracket.
The two-wheel nitro burners also put on a show, as Athol Williams broke both
ends of the ANDRA Top Bike record. The Flying Kiwi who has now wrapped up the
ANDRA Top Bike championship is now the proud owner of the elapsed time record,
which now sits at 6.169 and the speed record, which is a scary 383 km/h.
John Zappia’s Striker Crushing Monaro also ran under the national record. His
5.843 charge was good enough to be a new Doorslammer track record at WSID and
number one qualifier. Gary Phillips finally joined the Five Second ‘Slammer
Club with a 5.984 in a tight field where Ray Bernard rounded out the field with
a 6.189.
ANDRA Pro Stock turned on the heat again as we witnessed the quickest ever
naturally aspirated hot rod field in history. Dave Newcombe’s Brisbane Isuzu
GTO topped the list with a 7.121, as just .059 seconds separated him from
eighth placed Lee Bektash’s 7.180.
ANDRA Top Alcohol saw the fastest side by side pass in history when number one
qualifier Gary Phillips ran a 5.545 against Debbie Reed’s 5.573, the latter
going just .001 of a second off the national record for Top Alcohol Dragster.
Hogs Breath Café’s Michael Gilbertson was the stand out in ANDRA Pro Stock
Motorcycle, pushing his Suzuki to a 7.381, to be number one qualifier.
So the scene is set for an exciting race day at Western Sydney International
Dragway, with ANDRA Top Fuel kicking off the action from 11am sharp - TODAY.
