Phillips Doubles; Self Scores Second In a Row
Belle Rose, La. (March 22, 2009) – Picture perfect weather and more than 500 racers treated the fans to an unforgettable 6th Annual JEGS Cajun Sportsnationals this weekend at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., with Tommy Phillips leading the way to winner’s circle with wins in both the Super Comp and the Super Gas.
Phillips of Forney, Texas, held off Scooter Choate, Hubbard, Texas, in the Super Comp final and former National Champion Sherman Adcock of Fortson, Ga., in Super Gas.
Kevin Self defended his JEGS Cajun Sportsnationals from a year ago winning over Greenwell Springs, La., resident Joey Tanksley. Self drove his ’32 roadster to 7.921-second lap at 163.69 mph.
In the TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster class, Casey Spradlin, Ranburne, Ala., took out local racer Thomas Levatino of La Place, La., with a run of 6.851 seconds, at 192.00 mph while NHRA Southeast Division Champion Jeffrey Barker took the win in the Sunset Racecraft Top Sportsman class over Mike Coughlin and his JEGS.com sponsored ’06 Cobalt. Baker, Warner Robins, Ga., clocked in at 7.159, 188.66.
Brad Zaskowski, Belmont, Mich., scored his second SPORTSNationals win in Super Stock winning back in 2007.
Rounding out the winners were Austin Williams of Burleson, Texas, beating Dan Fletcher in Stock; Mike Desio, Seminole, Fla., winning in Super Street over Paul Martinez; and Alex Barmettler making the trip from Maplewood, Minn., worth the drive in the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson class.
Craig Treble took time off from the NHRA Full Throttle series in the Pro Stock Motorcycle to run in the Sportsman Motorcycle class this weekend falling short of the win. Also on hand was Troy Coughlin making exhibition passes in his Pro Street car and Elaine Larson in her jet dragster. Troy also runs in the NHRA Pro-Mod series out of the JEGS Mail Order camp.
Sportsnationals events date back to 1974 with most events in the 70’s and 80’s being ran in Bowling Green, Ky., with this being the first of three JEGS Sportsnationals scheduled for the 2009 NHRA season.
Many of this weekend’s competitors will head to Houston and Houston Raceway Park for next weekend’s NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. The South Central Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series heads to the Texas Motorplex near Dallas, April 3-5, for their next event.
