2009 Woodburn Fall Classic Results
It is difficult to imagine how the 24th Annual Baxter Auto Parts•BiMart Fall Classic, held September 12 & 13 at Woodburn Dragstrip, could not have been more perfect for the racers and fans. Excellent track conditions, excellent weather, and excellent performance combined to make this a nearly perfect final major event for 2009.
Afterburner pops from Darin Bay’s Warped Speed Jet Dragster shook the tower and grandstands twice on Sunday prior to blasts through the quarter-mile traps at speeds of 295 and 297 mph.
Salem’s Jeff Ashwell started the AA/FC qualifying with an outstanding 5.77 in the first session. Brian Hough was second with a 5.78 and vowed to take the top spot in the second session. Brian made his promise stand with 5.73 blast. Todd Miller, driving for Donn Hossford, also looked very strong with his 5.89 performance before hurting some parts. David Germain and James Peters also looked great with low 6-second runs.
Three excellent drivers performed flawlessly in Top Alcohol Dragster, led by Joey Severance with back-to-back 5.49 and 5.50 laps at 260 mph. Salem’s Gregg Lawrence laid down a 5.79, and Sumas WA driver, Bill Edwards was side by side with a 5.78.
Puyallup, WA’s Randy Parker bested the 8-car field of BB Funny Car with a 6.78 second 204 mph pass in his Datsun F/C over St. John’s WA racer, Royce Taylor’s Mustang which ran 6.88. \
Competition is always tough in Pro Nostalgia as was proven again as Lloyd Hamilton took the victory over Mike Peck in the finals. Peck dialed 6.99 and ran 6.986, breaking out by .004 which gave the win to Hamilton. In prior rounds, Peck had defeated Todd Miller and Curtis DeFrang, while Hamilton had taken down Dewayne Sanders and Steve Cox.
Low qualifier in Top Comp was Salem, OR racer Rich Bailey who hit a 7.093 at 188 mph. Steve Cooper took the victory over John Chitwood in the finals and ran 7.767 at 161 mph.
Keith Johnson drove his 66 Ford to the Super Street victory over Dudley Gee. Nick Bresaw took the victory in Super Gas, driving Ross Childress’s T-Bird and downing Rodney Souza’s 57 Chev Roadster. The Northwest Super Comp Association had two days of competition, with Geoff Hughes taking the victory on Sunday after a runner-up finish on Saturday. Rick Dearinger was runner-up on Saturday while Tom Gresham, took the victory on Sunday.
David Chun, Jr. again showed why he is consistently at the top of the competition with his win in Pro. Chun drove his dragster to victory over Reid Rund’s Moby Grape El Camino.
Adam DePeel has earned the top Sportsman prize in two consecutive races with his victory today over Jerry Weber, who had earned his latest victory just two weeks earlier. DePeel drove his Camaro to victory running 12.847 in the finals.
Second generation racer, Travis Patridge, from Kennewick, WA, just received his competition license this weekend and earned his first victory in this, his first event. Blasting down track in 8.53 seconds and taking the victory in the finals over Salem, OR racer, Shawn Blehm was the perfect way to celebrate his perfect weekend.
With his win in Dragsters & Roadsters, Ron Austin is the 2009 Champion in this series, with a 10 point lead over Steve Marcus. The Medford, OR racer drove his Slightly Twisted Fiat flawlessly all day, taking a 9.019 to 10.146 victory over Tom Stanford in the finals.
The Dalles racer Joe England took the win in Northwest Drag Bike Pro Street over Sherwood, OR racer Kerry Drost. Medford OR’s Scotty Pollacheck was victorious in Northwest Drag Bike Pro Mod over former Pro Stock Motorcycle racer from West Linn, OR, Larry Cook.
