MANZO AND MCPHILLIPS FIND SUCCESS IN NORWALK
NORWALK, Ohio (May 17, 2010) - In the final results from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series B'LASTER Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser event at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, Rich McPhillips, Phoenixville, Pa., and Frank Manzo, Morganville, N.J., took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.
McPhillips came from the No. 8 qualifying position taking out No. 1 qualifier Mike Kostky and Ken Perry on his way to a final round match up with former North Central division champion Marty Thacker, Robinson, Ill. McPhillips saved his best run of the weekend for Thacker as he posted a 5.519 second lap at 248.80 mph to Thacker’s 5.680, 185.38
Manzo, the defending event and NHRA Lucas Oil National Champion faced off against Ray Drew, Hales Corner, Wis., in the final round and posted a winning run of 5.5007 seconds, 262.49 mph in his '10 Monte Carlo. Drew ran a 6.117 second, 220.48 mph lap for his runner up finish. As usual, Manzo was quick and consistent all weekend qualifying No. 1 with a 5.506 and running 5.498, 5.503, and 5.507 in eliminations.
In Comp Eliminator it was a battle of home state racers with Rick Brown, Lebanon, Ohio, holding off John Coughlin, Delaware, Ohio, while former NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock runner Dave Connolly, Elyria, Ohio, won over Marco Abruzzi, Warren, Ohio, in Top Dragster with a pass of 7.028 seconds, 171.03 mph.
For the first time in history, Summit Motorsports Park had to close its gates on Saturday afternoon as the sold out crowd enjoyed close and furious racing action along with an exhibition show that had everyone on their feet.
Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Jeremy Duncan, Charlestown, Ind., in Super Stock; Steven Schmidt, Navarre, Ohio, in Super Comp; David Walther, Lanesville, Ind., in Stock Eliminator; Billy Smith, Cynthiana, Ky., in Super Gas; and Randi Lyn Shipp, Floyds Knobs, Ind., in Super Street. In the division’s Top Sportsman class it was Jimmy Fallon, Trenton, Ohio, taking the win while Tina Duncanson, Acton, Ont., took the win in Pro Stock Snowmobile.
North Central Division racers head to O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, May 21-23.
