After getting a few hours of shut eye after the August 2009 Texas Raceway event, it was time to do it all over again. Most of the teams from Friday night went to Crandall on Saturday but a few headed home. Twelve outlaw pro mod teams rolled into the concrete palace and here's what went down after 2 rounds of qualifying:
#1 Gaylen Smith - 3.943 at 193 mph
#2 Todd Martin - 4.000 at 188 mph
#3 Steve Wiley - 4.054 at 181 mph **Personal Best**
#4 Ken Thomas - 4.056 at 179 mph
#5 Doug Riesterer - 4.180 at 176 mph
#6 Steve Gorman - 4.313 at 168 mph
#7 Tom Malouf - 4.653 at 144 mph
#8 Kevin Hargett - 4.711 at 148 mph
#9 Chuck Poindexter - 4.713 at 151 mph
#10 John Sheffield - 4.922 at 158 mph
#11 Chris Smith - 5.556 at 87 mph
#12 Jackie Deaver - 12.091 at 66 mph
First round:
Ken Thomas (W) 4.061 at 177 mph (.026 RT)
Doug Riesterer (RU) 5.140 at 112 mph (-.139 RT) Red Light
LenMar sponsored Bad Hoss -vs- LenMar sponsored Mad Scientist. Doug tried to cut a good light and he left a little too soon giving the automatic win to Ken Thomas' "Bad Hoss".
Steve Wiley (W) 4.075 at 177 mph (.101 RT)
Steve Gorman (RU) 4.298 at 167 mph (.027 RT)
This was a closer race in person than on paper due to the reaction times. Steve Gorman was going for the win with a huge holeshot advantage but he couldn't hold off the horsepower in the LenMar Motorsports lane in Jimmy Hector's '63 Vette driven by Steve Wiley who normally pilots the family owned Texas Grim Reaper.
Todd Martin (W) 4.044 at 188 mph (.164 RT)
Tom Malouf (RU) 5.982 at 80 mph (.143 RT)
Tom lost traction and had to abort the run meanwhile, Todd Martin out of Mustang, OK was on another great run and takes the win. Glad to have you racing with us, Todd.
Gaylen Smith (W) 3.995 at 191 mph (.189 RT)
Kevin Hargett (W) 4.644 at 161 mph (.022 RT)
Gaylen noticed the electronic dash quit working on that pass so he left "ole school" style (not on the two-step). Kevin left first but shortly after take-off, the hard charging Hemi in the Hell Fish was on a mission in the LenMar Motorsports lane and claims the win.
Semi Finals:
Steve Wiley (W) 4.042 at 179 mph (.082 RT) **Another personal best**
Todd Martin (RU) 8.004 at 70 mph (.101 RT)
As soon as Todd hit the throttle he encountered traction problems and had to abort the run. Steve Wiley leaves first and never looks back as he clocks another personal best.
Ken Thomas (W) 4.189 at 170 mph (.036 RT)
Gaylen Smith (RU) 10.989 at 42 mph (.048 RT)
Another LenMar -vs- LenMar match-up and this time the "Bad Hoss" makes a conservative run down the Dallas Raceway lane while team TBH in the LenMar Motorsports lane smokes the tires at the hit of the throttle and Gaylen just had to sit back and watch Ken grab the win.
Finals:
Ken Thomas (W) 4.068 at 178 mph (.057 RT)
Steve Wiley (RU) 4.624 at 120 mph (.070 RT)
After a stellar outing and great performance all night long Steve will have to settle for the runner-up finish but somehow I don't think that mattered one bit. Sure the win would have been nice, but the performance out of the Hector/Wiley team was outstanding. Congratulations to Jimmy Hector, Steve Wiley and the entire combined team for your runner-up finish. Congratulations to Ken Thomas and the entire LenMar/Thomas Motorsports team for the victory at Dallas Raceway. One win and one runner-up makes for a pretty good weekend.
