Texas Backhalf Outlaws at Texas Raceway, October 2009
Text by Summer Loar ~ Photo by 660 Photos
First off I have to say this was the most eventful night in Texas Back Half Outlaw history! We had 27 Teams turn out for the Season Finale! And these teams were ready to show everyone what true racing was all about.
The track was prepped and was ready to show them what hookin up was all about. Texas Raceway Staff did an awesome job with so many teams there and being a little short handed. We thank you for all your hard work.
The pits were full of cars, driver's, crew members & fans. It was loaded in spite of the cool weather that set in.
There was also a 4.80 index and a 5.30 index and the Driver's finally decided to show their times! It made for an extremely interesting evening.
There was also $100 up for grabs for the longest Burn-out put up by Rico Padilla.
5.30 Class
Round 1:
Lil Fernando Ayala (W) .055 5.359 128.38 Baby Fly Luv Truck
Spencer Johnson ( F)-.010 8.95 62.19 Good Looking 68 Burnt Orange Camaro
Spencer tried to cut a light on Lil Fernando and cut it a little to close for comfort and blew the tires off on top of that. Lil Fernando took that advantage and ran with it.
Gerald Bennett (W) .907 5.61 107.56 Play too Much Silver Box Nova
Troy Byrd (F) Beautiful 67 Chevy II
Troy had some problems getting staged and was timed out after Gerald took the light.
Mike Kelley (W) .241 5.39 137.01 Nice looking Red Stang
David Haley (L) .242 5.57 123.68 Full Bodied 72 Chevelle
Amazing R/T's for these two! David just couldn't hang with the light weight Mustang.
Ralph Starling (W) .369 5.51 113.71 White 78 El Camino
Keith Williams (L) .959 5.44 124.68 Deep Red 75 El Camino
Two team mates face each other and Ralph is off of his game and Keith appears to give Ralph the hit! But Keith chased him to the very end. Ralph was also going for the longest burn out money and it was to be seen if he would get it.
Mike Milsap (W) .127 6.40 109.28 Awesome Orange 89 Mustang
Bob Hell Yeah Cooley (DQ) .110 5.26 131.08 Quick Black 280Z
Hell Yeah was out on Mike and Mike kept throwing sparks from his headers but Mike got to advance to the next round due to Hell Yeah being a "little" too quick.
Michael Hollis (W) .136 5.307 136.79 Small Tire 69 Yellow Camaro
Brandon Blair (DQ) .105 5.251 130.49 Screaming Blue Beast 67 Camaro
Brandon was out on Mikey and gone only to give it back to him due to the index! I must say that the Yellow Camaro had that dialed in nicely on that round.
Blake McBride (W) .084 5.58 112.09 Show Style Orange 69 Camaro
Richard Piper (L) 8.42 10.05 82.13 Super Clean 72 Nova
Blake hit the throttle and was gone and something happened to the Nova to make him late off the tree.
Richard Blair (W) .155 5.67 118.52 Beautiful Checkered 79 Vette
John Villareal (L) .208 6.35 108.33 Gorgeous Flamed 67 Chevelle
Richard was out on John and John went for broke chasing him to the finish line.
Now this Chevelle is an awesome car for the full weight that it carries.
Round 2:
Michael Hollis (W) .077 5.35 121.85
Ralph Starling (L) .058 5.49 114.20
Ralph got out and away on Michael but Michael's horsepower came into play and passed him.
Blake McBride (W) .104 5.43 105.70
Richard Blair .163 5.80 105.26
Two team mates meet up and Blake got off the tree first and Richard was determined to run him down. Richard was on and off of the gas and was not giving up.
Mike Millsap (W) .202 5.48 131.25
Mike Kelley (DQ) .370 5.238 139.36
Both were a little slow coming off the line and Mike Kelley went to run Mike Millsap down and went just a "little" too fast.
Gerald Bennett (W) .074 5.321 131.50
Lil Fernando Ayala (L) .112 5.32 128.18
This was by far an amazing race! They both ran the same ET's! Lil Fernando was way off his RT and lost the race on a holeshot.
Round 3:
Gerald Bennett (W) .031 5.321 121.47
Mike Millsap (L) .240 5.53 112.62
This where Mike's luck ran out and Gerald was proving consistancy in another round. Check out that ET again!
Michael Hollis (W) .086 5.32 135.21
Blake McBride (DQ) .152 5.230 116.47
Blake knew with Mikey on the tree he had to make up some distance on the track and it cost him this time. And trust me this was a battle to the finish line.
Finals:
Michael Hollis .064 5.368 123.50
Gerald Bennett .084 5.59 97.78
Mikey was out on Gerald and Gerald was in it for all it was worth and near the finish line something went wrong and Gerald went for the line and then the car went dead left into the wall and coming to a halt past the finish line. Gerald was not hurt, but, the car will have reconstructive surgery done in the off season.
Congrats goes to Unc and Michael Hollis and Crew on your 2nd win in a row with the Texas Back Half Outlaws in the season Finale. We are going to name your car Mr. Consistancy! All this on small tire, too!
Round 1:
4.80 Class
JoJo Melton .069 4.88 129.65 Black Da Beast 68 Turbo Camaro
Bobby Spurgin .092 5.10 145.06 Turbo 69 Camaro
JoJo was out on Bobby and Bobby lit the tires up and had the horsepower but not enough to get the win.
Flip Wilson (W) .090 5.193 139.39 Beautiful Blue 87 Mustang with Ghost Flames
Al "Snake" Sneed (L) .129 5.190 144.75 The Awesome Turbo 68 Camaro
This race was nasty to say the least. Flip was out on Al and the track wasn't being too kind to them and check out those ET's! Flip won with a holeshot.
John Sheffield (W) .141 4.825 143.66 Black Turbo 88 Mustang
Shawn Wilholt (L) .127 Good looking all new 63 Chevy II
I didn't get to see this race, but, Shawn was off the line 1st and something broke on the car to bring him to a crawl to the end.
Charles Letteer (W) .144 5.262 134.00 Awesome Red 89 Mustang
Gaylen Smith (L) .093 5.726 105.00 The One and Only Checkerboard Camaro
Now remember the $100 for the longest burn-out....well, so did Gaylen Smith. He took it past the 330 to collect that $100! Now for the race Gaylen was out on Charles and Charles was not about to let him beat so the fight was on, but, something happened to the Checkerboard and it slowed down on him and Charles took that win!
Josh Lindsey (Bye) All New Awesome Blue Turbo 04 Mustang
Josh is going to be a force to be dealt with in this New Turbo Mustang in 2010.
Richie Price (Comp Bye) .060 5.01 143.55 Clean Blue 68 Camaro
Travis Orr (Broke)
Travis was unable to make the call due to an earlier mishap with the car and he was a part of the teams entered in this race. Therefore he was put in the drawing and not left out.
Round 2:
JoJo Melton .159 4.95 133.20
Richie Price .115 5.06 141.02
Richie was out on JoJo but he just couldn't hold off that hard charging turbo Beast.
John Sheffield (W) .074 4.98 128.46
Charles Letteer (L) .286 5.305 134.60
Turbo vs Nitrous and Charles was late off the line against John and that ended it right there for Charles.
Flip Wilson (W) .052 6.90 21.04
Josh Lindsey (DQ) .106 5.08 120.48
Now this race got ugly. Flip was out on Josh and Josh went for the chase and ended up crossing the center line just after passing Flip. Josh ended up in the same lane and Flip decided to just bring his to an idle down the track and stay out of the way. Tame that Horsepower Josh!
Semi's :
John Sheffield (W) .039 4.95 132.54
Flip Wilson (L) .076 5.59 101.67
John was out and gone and Flip knew there was no catching him.
JoJo Melton (Bye) .053 4.769 155.11
