The Night Shift

Here's where we go to kick back after the races with our pals. Pour a tall one, punch a few buttons on the jukebox, and relax...

Today begins my summer guitar course for 11-14-year-olds at College of the Mainland. They booked 16 kids into the class before they realized how many had signed up. I told 'em 2 classes of 8 each would be a lot more productive than one with 16 kids in it, for an hour and a half...they're going to see if they can get a second class going with some of the kids switching to the "second shift"...I got an email from Sabrina, who took my blues guitar class last spring, offering to help me and I said I appreciate that...she is a beginner guitarist, but is deeply committed to learning, researching and glorifying blues history. She's a great lady. I played a gig Sunday afternoon with Lynn and Toree down at Tiki Island, which is right off the Southern tip of the Mainland from the Galveston Causeway. We played for the 30th anniversary of some folks that Toree knows. They are truly rich, which was proven not just by the 300,000-dollar speedboat hanging by the pier and the 3-story custom-built weekend water house that they had the party at, but by the fact that when it came time to get paid, they gave Toree a CHECK. So Toree had to write checks to me and Lynn ($100 each for 3 hours)...they're rich people. They don't have money. I'm surprized they didn't ask Toree if she took American Express...but I went ahead and drove across the Causeway after the gig and went and visited my Dad in Galveston for an hour before I came back home. My stepmom had fallen a few days earlier and broke her nose. She's a beautiful woman but it looked like she'd been whacked with a baseball bat across her face...they're falling and getting injured all the time. My Dad had 10 stitches in his head last month. They're stumbling around. I am deeply concerned but he won't let me say or do anything to help him...he thinks I'm going to make him move into a nursing home...it's become a real problem trying to hang out and get along with my folks, but he is who he is and I'm in the mode of just being respectful and quiet around him. When Shakedown played Saturday night at Beamer's Place, we had a bass player sub for Mikey. He's Mark Fenton, and he is the head bartender and club manager of the Cock-Eyed Seagull in Clear Lake. He offered me one of the weekly open-mic jams they have there on Thursdays. It pays $100. I'm going to get Lynn to come and bring his powered PA mixer...mine's not working...and I'll give Lynn half of what I make. That's good, because Lynn has done me the same favor. The other night I played some solo stuff and Mark heard it and he likes what I do, so he said you do one, man. Come in and play your stuff and get folks up to jam with you...it sure made me feel great to get that offer; it puts me in the big leagues out there. I'm gonna fix up a flyer for it and try to get some buddies to come out and play that night...if I can hold the crowd past happy hour (9:30), then it will have been a success...Yesterday morning, Pee Wee Bowen called and offered me a gig this weekend with his band, but I am already booked with Shakedown for a debut at the Neon Moon in LaPorte. What I'm getting at, is that if I can manage to keep this momentum going, I can "turn pro"...and just about make it...the phone keeps ringing. The Citykings will be back in the studio to finish "Apple of my Eye" in July. Bill got an email from Andy, I posted the link yesterday of him and Johnny Nash. It is all so very, very close to becoming a full-time job...Cheers, WC1
