let's see ... since it's 2 stroke it doesn't matter if it's right side up or up side down.. put injection on it... mount two side by side...still be lighter than a bbc.... but could you hide it under a hood ???.. then you wouldn't be laughed off the track just out of the pit's .. broke dad

Gary, I don't think a 450 cu in hemi 2-stroke on nitro would be laughed out of anywhere once they got their thumbs out of their ears! Could you imagine the noise at about 15,000!  I could hear NHRA now.,.................................................................BANNED!!
If you think it's exciting now, wait till we start it.

in actuality you nuts could make this work if you used the Detroit design with the scavenge ports in the cylinder and the exhaust valves in the head ( yes Detroit uses poppet valves in the head ) there was a guy down in lemont IL his name was Marty that made a v-12? 91 series Detroit diesel racing engine for a semi truck that ran 12's , as for the merc marine v-8s they are oil injection on the cranks w/roller bearings and there used to be a class of midget racers that used them before they outlawed them , they where too fast accelerating and the cars would flip over . a two stroke can be mounted in any position and if you are using injection its easier yet , heres a little known fact . the messerschmitt me-109 V engines which where 4 stroke drysumped where mounted with the cranks up and the cylinder heads down in other words the motor was upside down , the reason was so the pilot could see over the motor . oh my I just realized I'm as nutty as you guys ... OK lets order pizza and a get some suds and hammer one of these bad boys out .

Gary the Detroit isn't as heavy as some conventional diesels like the cat/Cummings ,they are light ( a 6-71 weighs about as much as a BBC ) the v series are even lighter and they are considered a high speed diesel ( 4200 max rpm before you start bending valves and throwing rods ) I had a 2-71 run away on me in the yard and before she puked it was spinning around 5 grand ( talk about noise!!!!) so I think the casting would be good enough for nitro as they are sleeved ( can't remember if its a wet or dry sleeve) and the nice thing all the drives are built into the block so no separate sheaves to worry about . the only bad thing about a 2 stroke is timing if the timing gets off on start up even with the gas motors you can get them to run Backwards ( which is a weird sight to see smoke coming out of the breather housing  ) Honda corp did a study on the 2 stroke for cars in the 70's and had some rather unusual designs that worked real good . T Suzuki ( not related to the motorcycle manf. covers this in some of his books .
