I saw one of those engines you described we had it laying around at the shipyard came out of a boat!, always wondered what it sounded like running never had the chance to work on it , was too busy building or rebuilding stuff, like a bobcat with a turbo duetz deisel ( thing would wheelie with a load in the bucket if you weren't carefull ) and my boss down there used to remark when we tested a detroit" boys try to keep this one together...

" after we would test one and put it in the boat or on the barge ( for pumps) my big number injectors would disapear out of the toolroom and then when the boat would come back it looked like it was a steamer burning coal .... I know .... as a mechanic you are supposed to fix things, not try to blow them up ( but its fun!!! )

I know .... as a mechanic you are supposed to fix things, not try to blow them up ( but its fun!!! )It started sucking the oil out of the crankcase and burning it!! It was beyond help. We ran as fast as we could. When it exploded, it sent jugs pistons and pieces through the windows above the door in the motorpool, stuck chunks of metal in the door of a 5-ton wrecker, we were still finding pieces months later!! If you are gonna stop a runaway diesel, you had better do it before it gets too far, cause it will turn red and start feeding itself, on itself. They are cannibals. I didn't think a 1700cu in engine could buzz that tight. It didn't for long.
