The often outspoken and controversial minister who created "The Moral Majority", founded a college, was courted by the most powerful figures in American politics, and left an indelible stamp on our country's conscience. His image as the chubby finger-pointing televangelist in a light blue polyester suit is the one most of us probably will remember about him, but looking past the huckster image he projected, I saw a simple man of decency and devotion who spoke his mind and he made sure we all heard him. He was not plagued by any of the personal vices, scandals or demons that his peers were exposed to have had. They all looked like caricatures; imitators of him to me, anyway. He was the new Billy Graham with an attitude. I am personally way-out-there spiritually, and Jerry's style kind of grated against mine. I suppose it was that way with a lot of folks, but he had a huge following and those who chose to walk his path are no doubt headed to their finest eternal rest some day. I like people like him, probably in a lot of different mediums. The world moves on, but I can't see anyone replacing Jerry Falwell, except maybe Joel Osteen, but Joel's "hip". Rest in peace, Rev.
