Well, alot has happened over the past few days....

On Friday morning I headed down to mom & dad's to work on the Hot Rod. Tiffany and Brittany (The Slicks) and I got down there around 9:00 and unloaded the car and started tearing into it.

We completely disassembled the fuel system from the tank to the barrel valve.

I took the pump up to the shop and did a bench test on it to see if it would pump. It would, but it wouldn't build any pressure. I (prematurely) concluded that the pump had something wrong with it. After talking with Dave K and Dan R it seemed that the pump "might" have something wrong with it. I left it in the shop while I went back the car to deal with other issues such as running a ground from the battery to the MSD Digital 7 and grounding both of the cylinder heads to the battery. I kept working on miscellaneous items until my cousin Chad showed up and I showed him the problem with the fuel pump. While comparing the Enderle 80A to an Enderle 110 I realized that in order to build pressure I need a restriction. I was in the forest but I couldn't see a tree...

We put a -6 fitting on my 80A pump and low and behold it was fine!!!

Since we had fought with the the system so much earlier in the week I didn't give up and we kept tracking the system working our way from the tank to the nozzles. (MFI is simple physics...) Only the stink, thunder and glory confuse things...

As we were working with the car I noticed we had plenty of pump pressure but the engine wouldn't run... I soon realized that the problem was the check valve down by the port distribution block. I had Chad and Tiffany pull the line that goes from the Barrel Valve to the port distribution block off and sure enough it was plugged with the white gunk that alcohol fuel systems develop.

After cleaning this poppet and reassembling we were ready to fire. All went fine and the engine was responding as I expected.

We went ahead and shut it down, cleaned the fuel system and loaded the car up. Although the car was running I had alot more work to do and Saturday was the Drag List Nationals.

On Saturday Dad, Tiffany and I headed down to ERP for the Drag List Nationals. My brother Josh was working in the tower and we met up with my cousin Chad at the track. When we got there we quickly setup the pit area and I had them pull the bad fuel line off and I started checking the nozzles for gunk. Several of them had crud in them and had to be cleaned out. Once we were done with that we went with Rapid Randy down to his pit area to put a new AN hose end on our fuel line that went from the BV to the distribution block. After I reinstalled the line Chad reinstalled the fuel tank and I reattached the pump loop line, the main bypass line, and the other MFI lines. We filled the tank with methanol and checked for leaks.

After I decided we were leak free and after visiting with Rock, Slick Vic, Lippy, Rapid and a host of other Drag List guys we were ready for a quickie warm-up. I wanted to check the timing, check for leaks, and then shut it down.

We fired it off and all was good, no leaks and the engine was fat and happy. I checked the timing and it was a tad low at 30* advance. We shut it down and I readjusted the timing to 36* and refueled. It was time for photos so we headed up to the track and had the Drag List pictures taken. If you haven't been to the Drag List you need to check it out at www.draglist.com the finest people in Drag Racing run/are on the board.

After the picts and Mike Casella's pass I headed down to Mike's pits to talk about MSD and nitrous stuff. His car is pretty darn cool www.1960belair.com !!

Since it was getting dark and I don't have lights in my pit space I headed back and we fired off the car. It had a pig-rich tune-up in it and the timing was a tad low, but the engine was responding exactly as I expected it to!! I left the BV as is, I need the Click-Fast from www.hadfordracing.com/click-fast.htm but Christmas is to far away... :)

Mike Canter and the gang at www.americandragracing.com/xmb1/forumdisplay.php?fid=26

and my Mom & Dad who put their $ $$,$$$ where my mouth is and let me be the crew chief on this Hot Rod. Without them...

My crew: Josh, Chad, Tiffany & Brittany. Without them, I would have to do EVERYTHING!

I also am very grateful to Dan & Joanie Russell who not only are teaching me the ways of Top Fuel racing but are also there for me whenever I need anything.

After our warm-up we shut the car down, drained the fuel system, hot lashed the valves, changed the oil and put the car away. Next time we head to the track all I have to do is check the nozzles, install the System 1 Oil Filter, verify TDC and lean it out to start building some power.

I hope you liked my weekend report.

EDB

PS I cannot forget about our mascot "Flower" who lives in our trailer. If you stop by ask to see her. :)

PPS I also want to thank my uncles Dan Bru and Kevin Bru who got me started on drag racing and injected alcohol. Without them I might think that stock cars were race cars... :D

It was great meeting you and your family, Eric. I just read the thread at the link and wondered why I couldn't remember seeing it before... it wasn't until after I read it that I realized it was on another board!!! At least I know I'm not going crazy!!! Looking forward to seeing that bad 56 in a match race next time... we have the makings of a kick butt doorslammer show! bp

Thank you again for the ignition check-up. I will be ordering one of those testers as soon as I get home. It was great to finally meet up with you Eric. I am sorry I didn't get a chance to get up to your pit area, I would have loved to see more than just the nose section of your car.

A match race would be awesome!! I sure hope to have everything in working condition when the event comes around.

07/29 Update

Wow! It has been a long, but GREAT weekend. I will be glad to get back to work so I can rest up...

Friday morning I got up and headed over to the shop and met up with Dan and Nitro John. We organized the trailer, loaded tools and then loaded the Hot Rod and headed up to Cedar Falls for the 2007 Night of Fire.

www.cedarfallsraceway.com

Friday afternoon we stopped by R & J Performance and picked up our newly rebuilt billet heads and headed over to the the track. We unloaded the car and setup the pit area. After installing the billet heads and getting the fuel mixed we were ready to fire off the car (caah  ).

I jumped in the seat and Dan and Nitro John spun the engine to build oil pressure. After a few tries we realized there was a problem with our oil pump and decided to call it a day. We loaded everything up into the trailer and headed out to find a hotel for the night.

Saturday morning we got to the track and took the car (caah  ) apart to determine what the oil pressure problem was. We determined that our pump had suffered some damage at the Eddyville race and needed to be serviced. While Dan and Nitro John were working on this I completely disassembled and rebuilt the fuel system checking for any problems. By the time they were done I was ready to put the blower back on the engine.

We put a spare pump in after Roger at R & J Performance did a little clearancing on it for us. By this time the rest of the team was there and we were ready to get down to business.

I mixed up a batch of 90% fuel for the new engine combo and we fired the car off to set the timing, clutch, BV, etc. As soon as we started it up I noticed a pretty severe fuel leak on the BV. We quickly set the idle, timing and the clutch and shut it down.

While the crew was changing the oil, lashing the valves, retorquing the heads, etc. Dan and I went hunting for some O-rings for our BV. Finally I found some in Dale Suhr's Orange Crate pits. Dale showed me all I needed to know to change them out and I quickly had the new O-rings installed and Dan and I verified that our leakdown hadn't changed.

I then mixed up another batch of 90% nitro and we were ready for another warmup. This time I was in the seat. It is really a cool deal being in the seat of a Top Fuel car during warmup, the engine is right in front of you popping and cackling and you can see each cylinder firing out of the zoomies. Pretty soon we were ready for the clutch seating. I pulled back on the brake and Dan opened the enrichener, Outlaw John opened the idle air bleeds and then I pulled back on the brake.

Whack!!!

The new clutch was tight enough it took it away from me.

I grabbed again and stopped the tires.

Whack!!

That's a bit better, this new clutch is tough.

I let the tires spin as Dan shut the fuel off and Nitro John fed the engine the methanol. Oddly, the only time the engine hurts my ears is during the shut down as the pitch changes and the RPMs come up.

After the car was shut down I climbed out and mixed up another batch of fuel. I also checked the port nozzles to make sure that they were all tight. All was good so I went and visited with some of the other teams.

Pretty soon it was time to get the car on the ground for round 1. We pulled up into staging and played the hurry up and wait game until it was our turn to run. We pulled up into the staging area and fired the car off. Dan pulled through the water and did a nice long smoldering burnout and Radar did the same. As Joanie and Nitro John backed Dan up it was almost surreal the sights/sounds/smells of what was going on. My job on the starting line is to clean the left rear tire as Dan pulls towards the beams, I also make sure the fire systems safetys are pulled, the chute flags are pulled and the fuel system is OK.

All was well and we sent Dan down the track. I honestly don't recall what the ET/MPH were, 6.60 something at 175 and change I think and Radar ran something like a 6.02 at 225, I was just glad to see the chutes out and no fire or broken parts. We headed down the track and the safety guys were pulling Dan off the end of the track.

I want to give the safety guys at the end of the track a hearty THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!! It means alot to us that you are down there taking care of our drivers. I know it must be rough suited up in firesuits ALL DAY and I am sure you don't get enough pats on the back.

As soon as we got the chutes rolled up and everything secured I hopped in the Hot Rod and they pulled me back up to our pit area. Let me tell you, the cheers, thumbs-up, smiles, picts being taken, etc from fans while coming up the return road sure do make you feel good!! 8) People sure do love the front motored cars.

As soon as we got the car back into the pits the crew started taking it apart to see if anything was wounded. I pulled a fuel sample and David logged it. I then joined Nitro John under the car as he is teaching me the bottem end. As soon as the crew pulled the blower and heads off Nitro John and I started pushing the pistons up and out and checking the bearings. All were OK so we put her back together. We hadn't broken anything and all that was needed was to start leaning on the tuneup. Nick mixed up 92% batch of fuel and topped off the tank as Nitro John and I were finishing up the bottom end.

I checked a few nozzles that I suspected might be clogged and we were ready for Round 2. We got the car onto the ground and towed up to the staging area. David and I set the air pressure in the rear slicks and then we began the hurry and wait deal again. I went up to the burnout area and watched a few Ozark Mountain Super Shifter cars and Rapid Randy run then headed back to the Nitemare.

Pretty soon it was our turn and we rolled the Hot Rod out onto the track and fired it off. Dale fired off the Orange Crate and Dan and Radar both did some wicked burnouts. It was hard to tell, but they had to be close to half track by the time they got them stopped.

As soon as they got backed up I wiped my tire, checked the fire bottles, fire system and chutes. All was well as Dan pulled into the beams. The tree came down and they took off together. The track couldn't handle the power and it soon turned into a pedal fest. I couldn't tell who was where and who was winning due to the tire smoke but Dan's win light came on!! :D I heard that only the Nitro Madness made it down the track the second round.

We piled into the dualie and went down and picked him up. The fans were even more appreciative this time and gave us quite the ovation as we towed up the return road. All I could do is smile and nod as I had one hand on the wheel and one on the brake to help smooth out the bumps but it sure made me feel good to know that they got their money's worth. From my vantage point, it was a packed house and I wouldn't be surprised it this event set an attendance record for the track.

As we were coming up the return road Dale Creasy Jr and Jack Wyatt came down the track. Those TF/FCs sure will make the tin rattle in a car as they go by... :?

We towed back up to our pit area, I pulled a fuel sample while Nitro John checked the plugs and valves. Griz and Joey check the oil filter and dropped the oil. As soon as I was done with the fuel sample I drained and purged the fuel system.

It looks like nothing was broken and we had a good day. We loaded everything up and went out for supper (breakfast?) at around midnight. I got home at 3 this morning, although tired I wouldn't trade this for anything!!

I hope you enjoyed my report.

EDB

PS Thanks to my brother Josh for stopping by and Rapid Randy for helping me with my oil pressure gauge line!! :D

Thanks, Eric. I am SERIOUSLY behind the eight ball on ALL my draglist stories. Danny has about three or four funny car rounds stacked up for 60s, 70s, and 80s funny cars. Steve Klemetti has a Personal Best ready to go, and I've neglected the last several excellent stories by Randy and LionsDSisBest. Lots of other submitted photos, artwork, stories, too, including the full results of the last several national and division events. The damned day job is taking all my time!!! bp
