Thanks, Wheelz, but it's a done deal. There is a new Draglist Super Van. This one is a 2006 Grand Caravan in metallic dark blue. Not quite Navy, not quite Jungle Jim blue, but somewhere in between. Denise, the kids, and I looked at a lot of vans and SUVs this afternoon and we were tempted by Chrysler Pacificas, the big GMC SUV, dozens of Dodge minivans, a nice Mercury minivan, and even a big honkin' black hemi powered Dodge Durango. None of those fit the bill and we decided to to go the local Dodge dealer to see about getting a brand new one since brother Tim told me that they have zero percent financing on a 72 month loan. I was IN! This would be great... except, when we got there, we found that the cheapest one was $29K. I'm not spending that much for a minivan just to lose $10K as soon as I drive it off the lot. We walked two doors down to the same dealer's used car showroom and found a nice 2006 with 34K miles on it for $14.5K! I asked the kids, "That other van was nice, but do you think it was TWICE as nice as this one?" The answer was NO! So we did the deal... it's a little more basic (SE model not the STX) than we had, but it's a Grand Caravan, so it's big enough for the six foot teens (in fact, it was great having them with us because many of the seemingly huge cars simply could not fit them little monsters in the back comfortably). Earlier in the day, any thoughts of keeping the current machine ended when Emily had to go fetch something out of it and the alarm went off and would not stop. Just before Denise went to disconnect the battery cables, the cops rolled up. One of our caring neighbors called them just in case... that was nice, but Denise was DONE with "old Maroon." Now we are gonna be sliding to Eddyville in cool dark blue. Thanks for everyone's help on this... I'm happy with the final deal. bp

Well, today it is 13 years since I bought my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
It has 184,500 miles on it and got 21.3 going to California a year ago.
But the thing had a sticker of $27,750 13 years ago.
So, BP saying he never paid more than $20K has me thinking, what were we thinking. LOL
I did have a job back then though.

:( I miss my 83 suburban... paid $6500 for it in march of 1988.. it had 70xxx on it at the time .. loaded silverado from a non smoker, never hauled anything but groceries and drycleaning bags.. clean as brand new.. i drove it almost 20 years before the midwest weather ate the body off the frame mounts.. it was still kicking at 240xxx when i let it go for $650.. it had never let me down on the road between here and wherever.. woke up one morning to a flat tire, another time the battery blew up but both times is was in the driveway so an easy fix... the unit never saw a tow truck
GOOD TO GO !!

that sounds a lot like my truck jim, 238000 on it now, just towed the racecar 4 hours rond trip without so much as a whimper. the trans did loose 2nd od, and reverse once, but i drove it home (2+ hours) and had it fixed. it ain't new, and it ain't pretty, but the old girl has sure been good to me.
the police never think it's as funny as i do

I'm pouring a bottle of Lucas stop-leak into Ludwig's power steering once a week...at $19 a bottle, 20 after tax, that's starting to add up. I found this today and I might go ahead and do it...I did a Carfax on it, it was a rental car in California before it ended up here. It has some upholstery stains but I ain't buying it for the upholstery, ya know...

Thanks again, everyone. I was out most of the weekend. My company rents out the Six Flags amusement park in Maryland every September and that's where we were yesterday. The kids brought their friends, so that's why we really needed a new minivan Friday night. Today, we recovered from too much sun! Denise and I didn't do anything yesterday but sit in lounge chairs and drink beers. The kids ran all over the park with their pals. What a great day. Today, we are both a little too pink and a little too dehydrated, but we have recovered nicely. It sure was great getting all the good input on our purchase. Just got off the phone with Navy Federal and financed it for five years. We added another 2 grand to the purchase price and bought a five year bumper to bumper warranty. It was worth it. Seems like every six months I was taking the van in for a 1200 dollar tuneup. Let's see how it goes... bp
